I just got a note from a good friend that just (in the last few weeks) moved into the neighbourhood. Last night, someone broke into his basement, and stole all the copper piping. He is currently without heat and water. Thought you might like to be alerted so you could double check that basement door. Cheer Brett

[Highland Park] Kentucky Avenue School Open House Nov. 10

Hello all, Kentucky Avenue School (KAS) in Shadyside is having an Open House on Wednesday, November 10 at 7:00 pm. KAS is a K-8 private elementary school located in the 3rd Presbyterian Church at the corner of Negley and Fifth Avenue. It was founded when McEwan School closed in June of 2002. A group of teachers and parents got together, determined to save the school they loved so much, and opened its doors only 2 months later in the same site, with the same staff. This year's kindergarten has a waiting list but there are spaces in most of the other grades, and in next year's kindergarten class. Tuition is very reasonable and financial aid is available. I am a member of the KAS Board of Trustees and parent of a kindergartener and a fourth grader there. My husband and I love the small classes (10 to 12 per grade), individual attention, and creative, warm, learning environment that our kids experience at Kentucky Avenue School. Our sons are doing great both academically and socially, and we have formed a wonderful community bond with the teachers and other parents. If you have elementary school children, we hope you will attend our Open House on Wednesday November 10. You can tour the school, talk with teachers and parents, and attend a presentation by Dr. Brian Horvath, our Head of School. Hors d'oeuvres and wine will be served. Reservations are not required. Call KAS at 412-361-5332 or stop by any time to learn more about the school or the Open House. You can also visit our website at www.kentuckyavenue.org - it's currently fairly basic but a redesign will be completed by mid-December. The school entrance is on Kentucky Avenue. [Highland Park] Walk in the Park

Hello Highland Park neighbors, Please join me for a walk in the park tomorrow evening from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We will cover 1-2 miles of park terrain and will stop briefly in several areas of the park to talk about what's going on there. Meet at the park entrance just before 6:30 pm. We'll be on the right as you enter from North Highland Avenue. This free "Weekly Walk in the Woods" is sponsored by Venture Outdoors. There is a walk like this one in one of Pittsburgh's four main parks each Wednesday during the summer and early fall. The walks are also held during the winter, but on a monthly basis instead of weekly. It is customary to end up at Enrico's Tazza D'Oro afterward for a warm cup of tea or coffee (but this is not required :-) The temperature is expected to be in the 50's so dress accordingly! Oh, and check out the website for Venture Outdoors to see what they're about; they promote outdoor recreation by offering many different outdoor events ranging from easy ones like this to canoing and even wilderness survival. I have experienced a similar situation with the tanning salon (Shadyside Tan) on Highland avenue also across the street from the Casbah...and regret to say that my daughter suffered severe 2nd degree burns and had to be hospitalized twice in 48 hours and was dangerously dehydrating, ... it was a horrendous experience...the proprietor was also extremely beligerent and loud and yelling at me and no speaking in a business and respectful tone of voice. Apparently, they had also just changed the bulbs and were very intense heat and did not inform people as they came into the salon... A terrible experience... Hello Neighbors, As many of you know, Homewood Montessori is a pre-K through 8th grade Pittsburgh Public School magnet school. My 5-year-old son is a kindergartener at the school, loves going to school and is having a great experience. The Pittsburgh Public School magnet registration is November 1-12. Because of the school's expansion into a newly renovated facility, the school anticipates open spots for new students in all grade levels next year. If your child is entering Kindergarten next year, is eligible for the preschool (age 3 or 4 by September 1), or you are considering a school change for your older child, I hope you will consider Homewood Montessori. [Highland Park] Singalong

There will be a singalong for fun and friendship next Friday night October 22, 2004 at the home of Sherry Goldman and Marty Sivitz. We use Rise up Singing songbooks and other sources. If you don't have the book, don't worry... Someone will be happy to share with you. Accompanists (guitar or piano) are especially welcome. There may be a potluck first if there is enough interest. We'll start at 7:30 without a potluck, or 7:00 if there is one. Hi neighbors On Monday nights at the Nuin Center there is a hatha yoga class at 7:30. I have been attending this class for about a year and want it to continue. The Nuin Center has raised the rates for the space and, since there are only four of us in this class our instructor is looking for more students to cover her costs.
