[Highland Park] Seventh Annual St. Andrew's Lecture

A reminder to all that the Seventh Annual St. Andrew's Lecture will take place Friday evening October 15, beginning at 8 p.m. Our speaker is Dr. Robert Page. Dr. Page, Professor of Music at CMU and Director of Special Projects for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, is retiring this year at the end of his 26th season as Director of the Mendelssohn Choir. Dr. Page has been a leading figure in the renaissance of our region as a center for the creative and performing arts. Also featured at this year's Lecture will be St. Andrew's Guest Artist, Highland Park resident Ruth Mundundu, who as a "culinary artist" is a leading figure in our area's new focus on African cuisine. We'll enjoy a festive dessert reception reflecting the exciting cultural diversity of our neighborhood. (Ruth will also be the guest speaker at the Sunday morning "Coffee and" Conversation at St. Andrew's at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 17.) The event is free and open to the public, with all costs covered by the St. Andrew's Lecture Fund. Coffees at the reception courtesy of Amy Enrico and the Tazza d'Oro on North Highland Avenue. Hello All, Tazza D'Oro will be holding the last Presidential Debate Party tonight. PHEW!!! Is it time to vote yet??? Debate begins at 9 pm Gathering begins around 8 - 8:15 pm Tazza D'Oro will dig up some food and wine to share. But some of you have mentioned bringing some pot-luck stuff. I like the idea because I need some smells other than Tazza D'Oro. So, if you can, bring something to share (food,wine). Thanks again to Pittsburgh Custom Home Theatre for their time and support to provide a Plasma TV to Tazza D'Oro. Call these guys, they're awesome(412.362.1273). I just wanted to tell everyone that you can recycle old telephone directories, rather than throwing them into a land fill. There is a recycling bin in the parking lot of Home Depot. Every little bit helps. Jean Clickner

Hi, I'm very glad that the Neighborhood list has been useful for folks when they are seeking information. I have a suggestion--one that should strike a balance with those who value having a smaller number of messages to read... When you send a request for information, ask for replies to be sent only to you--and offer to send a summary of responses. Wait a week or so for the responses to come in, then send a message summarizing the responses as briefly as possible. Rudy

[Highland Park] Booms in the night

Have any of you heard and been jolted by the unpredictable but fairly regular explosive sounds that seem to come from the Farmhouse area a couple of times a week? Sometimes just one, sometimes one followed by another a few minutes later. Sounds like either some major major fireworks, or perhaps a blank shotgun shell (of the kind used sometimes to signal the start of sailboat races, and sometimes fired in miniature cannons.) Last night, for example, there was an explosion around 7:30. Usually they are between 7 and 10 PM, and they have been going on for several months. I'd like to know if others have also experienced this extremely annoying (and potentially dangerous) nuisance, and if you have any suggestions for how to deal with it. -David Klahr 1212 Heberton. NOTE: this has nothing to do with the police firing range. That is a very a different sound, and the issues there are well understood, and the noise is quite predictable once the range is in use.

Hello. We are doing a program for prospective NatureLAB children this coming Friday. These kids live in Section 8 housing in the Hill District, adjacent to the 26000 square foot site of NatureLABcommunity. We are in need of several items (either lent or donated). If we could get help from our friends and neighbors, we'd greatly appreciate it. We need: 1. art supplies to decorate pumpkins (paint, markers, brushes, etc.) 2.
