[Highland Park] Big Cleanup on Mellon Street

Hello All Good things are happening in Highland Park! I just found out that the Highland Park Community Development Corp (CDC) is getting ready for the houses on the 800 block of Mellon Street to begin construction. As you saw in the Union Project's update, they are helping to get the buildings cleaned out and ready for construction. If the buildings and yards are cleaned of debris, then there is less cost to rehab these houses. So this Saturday, November 13th, there is a big get-together on the 800 block of Mellon (between Jackson and Stanton). Come on out and check out the drawings of what is planned. Talk with some of the CDC members who have been working hard to get these properties rehabbed instead of demolished. Bring a few tools, gloves and some energy and give a hand to get these properties ready. If you are unfamiliar with the CDC, this will be a good introduction. Right now there are 4 homes that are scheduled to be worked on. On the entire 800 Mellon block, there are 11 homes and 2 apartment buildings. So when this project is done, there is going to be a major change on that block. I am looking forward to this. This will have a major impact on the entire Highland Park neighborhood. Construction is supposed to start in the Spring, according to the rumors I have heard. But you can come down on Saturday and find out the story. If you are not aware of the houses, you should stop by. They all have turrets, lots of potential, and are surprisingly large. So bring your tools, gloves and study shoes, or just stop by and check out the buildings. Since the buildings don't have power, bring a flashlight for those dark areas. Fortunately, houses in our neighborhood have lots of big windows, so most of the areas in the houses will have enough light. If you arrive at 9 am, then you can do some work and still have time to make it to the Farmhouse for the HPCC Harvest Party at 12:30. See you on Saturday. Bob HPCC President

Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org <http://www.unionproject.org/> - Volunteers Needed this Saturday Volunteers from The Open Door, Pittsburgh Singles Volunteer Network, Pittsburgh Cares, and Peabody High School will be lending a hand on this , but more help is needed! We will be working from 9 am to 3 pm at the Union Project and are also partnering with the Highland Park Community Development Corporation to clean up some abandoned properties on Mellon Street, just one block from the Union Project. Volunteers will be doing the final demolition work before new construction begins late this year! Come lend a hand to prepare the building for a new year. No special skills are needed. The Union Project has partnered with local farmers Neil Stauffer and Susanna Meyer on this innovative Christmas fundraiser. Christmas trees, wreaths, and other Christmas decorations will be on sale at the Union Project beginning Monday, November 29 and continuing until Christmas. Hours will be 11am to 9 pm, 7 days a week. Trees will be priced between $20 and $50, with proceeds benefiting the Union Project. UNWRAPPED a success! The Union Project held its third annual holiday art sale this past Saturday. A wind trio from Pittsburgh Symphony provided music. The event was a great success with over 200 people attending. You may still bid on the special stained glass window donated for this event. The window, while not a window from the Union Project, was restored by Richard Kerchner using techniques he learned in 2 Union Project stained glass restoration classes. The window is framed using historic oak hardwood salvaged from the Union Project Organ and refurbished by Don Reed of the Slaughterhouse Galleries in Lawrenceville. The auction will continue through December 18. The current bid is $350. New Stained Glass Classes Announced for 2005 To register for stained glass classes at the Union Project please call 412-478-3105 or email justin(a)unionproject.org with your first and second choice class preferences. In this class you will learn to repair and restore stained glass windows. This course will take you through simple repairs to complete disassembling and reassembling of historic 100-year-old stained glass church windows. Completed windows remain the property of the Union Project. You will learn how to cut and replace broken or missing glass, glaze, lead, solder and putty a window. This course will give you enough background to make your own new stained glass windows or restore your historic windows. The class fee is $175. The class is open to students of any skill level. Weekend Intensive class will cover the same restoration skills as general classes. Cost for this class is $250 and includes lunch on 2 days. This class is open to students of any skill level and can accommodate only 10 students. New Design Class will cover restoration skills as well as stained glass design techniques. Students in this class will design and build new Union Project "logo" windows to be installed in the Union Project building. [Highland Park] Sewing machine needles

I've got three packages of sewing machine needles size 11 (lightweight fabrics). Can anyone use them? The packages are so old, they are marked 30cents! If I haven't used them in this time, I'm obviously not going to. So, they are yours for free if you would like them. I don't sew very much on lightweight materials. Sherry Goldman

[Highland Park] Monthly potlucks

About every four to six weeks on a Saturday night, Marty and I like to host a potluck at our house. We generally have about 8-12 people (maybe more now that the list is growing). Most of us are semi-vegetarians at least, meaning we prefer a plant-based and healthy diet, and there are a few complete vegetarians, and occasionally a vegan. We love gourmet international food of any type, and prefer quality and variety over quantity. We usually start at around 8, eat all together, and then play some games. We decide on which games based on the wishes of the crowd on that particular night. People often bring their favorite games. There is no official ending time to the party. Marty and I are night people, so people are welcome to stay late. The next one planned is the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 27. We would enjoy getting to know some new people. So, if you would like to become part of a circle of friends that get together regularly for fun and camaraderie, please email or phone (412-215-9631). Since Marty and I prefer smaller, more intimate gatherings to large crowds, we do not invite enough people to guarantee a turnout. Also, we consider our potlucks as invitations to our home and not vague general announcements. So the only thing I ask is that you RSVP if you would like to come.
