We have been very pleased with Dunrite Windows, in Sharpsburg. They have replaced seven of our windows at a very reasonable price. Excellent workmanship, too. They are coming out in the fall to put storm windows over the big windows that we don't want to replace. Ask for Dino. [Highland Park] window help!

My husband and I have just moved to Highland Park from TX (where we pretty much had NO experience with winter). Our house here still has its original windows and we've been warned many times about the heating bill that this will cause. The original glass is just beautiful and I would hate to get rid of it. I was hoping that someone else might have another solution that has worked for them - other than window replacement? A window guy that I had out today said that the original windows lose 96% more heat than his Home Depot windows. RE: [Highland Park] Crime on N Saint Clair 1400 Block

Unfortunately, I also have an incident to report. I live on Bryant Street (between Negley and Portland), and my house was burgled yesterday afternoon. I received a call that my alarm was tripped at 1:23 p.m.; they apparently entered in through my open kitchen window (about 12 feet off the ground -- I suspect it might have been kids because I'm not sure that an adult would have been small or flexible enough to get through it). They then tripped the alarm, and left out the back door, but not before taking some painkillers left over from surgery out of my nightstand drawer. I have not yet noticed anything else gone. Oddly, they only took the narcotic drugs, leaving behind the non-narcotic prescription drugs, and also ignored jewelry and computers/electronics in the immediate vicinity. I'm not sure whether the alarm scared them off or not, but the report has been filed with the police (Zone 5) and obviously, I no longer have any windows open in my house. Hello, This issue is a good one for me to begin posting on this list. I live at 919 N. Euclid, and I frequently walk up to the Park. It boggles my mind that there is no concession to pedestrians at the intersection of Bunker Hill and Highland Ave. Highland Park is a major Pittsburgh City park...do they not anticipate that there will be frequent human crossings at that intersection? Why would it be that they would allow traffic to careen (there's just no other word for it) around the corner onto Highland, and to do so blindly (a driver cannot see what or who might be in their path as they hurtle into the turn), often in excess of 30 mph)? I agree, it's nothing short of miraculous that no one has been injured or killed while trying to cross into one of the city's major parks at that intersection. Very, very often, I see families with young children crossing there, mothers and fathers with baby carriages, children crossing with bikes, etc. No crosswalk? No stop sign? No reluctant nod to caution of any sort whatsoever? If anyone sees a homemade stop sign duct-taped to the post thereabouts, please assume that it was me...and I hope that it can aid your crossing into the park in some small way, before I'm hauled off in chains for defacing public property... --David Passmore

I live next to Flynn Parklet Park on N. ST Clair. They broke in through my front window took money from my daughter whom is only 12 years old and took my jewelry. I am now a little fearful of being in my home and want to find out where things are with forming block watches for various sections of Highland Park. This has been reported to the police on Zone 5. I also heard that on the same day someone tried to rob the Hostess Ho, Ho truck that was making a dilivery to the Walnut Street Market on Bryant. I am curious to know whether other homes were also robbed in the area on the same day. Any information that others have will be helpful. Sincerely, Debra Gloster

RE: [Highland Park] Paving reservoir walkway

On a related topic, it's occurred to me that there should be a painted crosswalk at the main Highland Avenue park entrance so that pedestrians walking to the fountain or reservoir can do so w/o risking being run over. Because of the traffic pattern, it's necessary to look over the left shoulder as one crosses. It's easy to miss cars that come up suddenly, and they don't always yield. Likewise, bicyclists come up suddenly in the bike path and never seem to stop for pedestrians (or even ring a bell or yell that they're approaching). If no one has been hurt yet, it will probably happen eventually. Is there any way for the Highland Park Neighborhood to put in a request to the city for the walkway around the reservoir to be repaved, especially with a softer pavement like they have in certain playgrounds like Crazy Park in Frick Park? I've been noticing the uneven surface is making it much more difficult to walk, now that I have some issues with my knee from getting older.
