Hello neighbors, The Highland Park Garden Club invites you to join us for a power point presentation on Permaculture this coming Saturday February 20th. Juliette (Jones) Olshock will be the presenter and teach us this technique and its practices with a power point presentation. This is a short definition of Permaculture: *Urban permaculture is a method that combines scientific knowledge and art to create agriculturally productive ecosystems that sustain and regenerate natural resources in an urban setting.* The goal of permaculture is to create human settlements that meet humanity's basic needs by providing clean water, healthy food, shelter, community and energy. It sounds really informative and interesting as we strive to have easier maintained and chemical free gardens in our neighborhood. The Highland Park Garden Club meetings are is open to everyone. the meeting starts at 10:00 am usually lasts for 2 hours and refreshments will be offered. The location of the meeting is 5900 Hampton Street in Highland Park. Would you please give us some feedback about the Saturday meetings: Is Saturday good for you? Would you come and rather have a weekday evening meeting? I welcome any feedback. We are also looking for a good soul and generous volunteer who would donate his time and expertise to establish our web page. We are a 501 (c) 3 organization. My work is very practical: I assist clients in recognizing and releasing old patterns, thought processes and beliefs that they have outgrown or that limit their potential. In addition to holistic counseling, I provide organizing for people who are making life changes, including divorce, down sizing and/or moving. These bare-root trees had a 1 1/2" caliper. One of these trees now boasts a 5 1/2" caliper! Check out the before and after below. If you visit Highland Park, be sure to look for these trees! Tree Tenders: Don't forget to bring your punch cards to earn great tools! Tree Pittsburgh has added two new reward levels to the Tree Tenders punch card program! All new Tree Tenders will continue to receive a punch card upon completing the Tree Tenders course. After completing 8 hours of Tree Pittsburgh volunteering and attending at least one Pruning Workshop, Tree Tenders receive a pair of Felco 5 pruners. Completing the first punch card will rise Tree Tenders to the Level 2 status, with another punch card! After completing 8 hours and attending at least one Mulching Party event, Level 2 Tree Tenders will receive a mini garden tiller as a reward. Following completion of Level 2, Tree Tenders will rise to Level 3 and receive another punch card. Completion of Level 3 requires Tree Tenders to volunteer for 8 hours and organize a Pruning Workshop with Tree Pittsburgh. After this, Tree Tenders will get the ultimate reward: a Silky pruning saw. Keep participating to earn those punches! Know Your Nursery: Our Nursery in the winter February is a month of love and flowers, and we thought we’d highlight one of the region’s most lovely flowering trees: the eastern redbud. In early April its blooms display a welcomed harbinger of spring, as you can spot their rosy pink flowers painting the hillsides of Pennsylvania. Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) is native to woodlands ranging from New Jersey to northern Florida and westward to the Great Plains. It grows up to 30 feet tall and bears showy rosy pink flowers. The heart shaped leaves emerge with a purple color, giving way to a lustrous green that will have your Valentine swooning! In the fall the leaves change to a bright lively yellow, and even in winter the redbud brings beauty to the landscape with their smooth grey bark and arching branches. While the redbud can be found growing wild in our forests, it also has a well-earned place in the garden, bringing beauty and grace to any landscape. Meet our Winter Pruning Crew Tree Pittsburgh has three members on our Winter Pruning Crew. Jason Oddo, Maeve Rafferty and Lan Tran work every week to ensure the health and vitality of the urban forest by pruning young trees. Get to know them! *Jason Oddo* Jason is "excited about encouraging the growth and health of the urban forest." This is his second year working as a member of the pruning crew, though he started volunteering in 2012. His favorite tree is a sassafras, though serviceberry is a close second. Jason looks forward to honing his tree identification skills this year. *Maeve Rafferty* Maeve has been involved with growing and planting some of Pittsburgh's trees, so she is excited to help them along in the next phase of life. She's helped with many pruning workshops since becoming a Tree Tender, and spent one winter pruning trees with our friends at Nine Mile Run Watershed Association. Her favorite tree? "The red maple outside my house, even though it's slightly wonky," she says. *Lan Tran* "Being a part of making Pittsburgh full of great trees is a wonderful feeling," Lan says. She has served with the Student Conservation Association since 2010 doing conservation work including invasive plant management, biodiversity monitoring and trail work. Her favorite tree is a live oak, or a fruit tree. We're hiring! We have seasonal positions open for our Nursery Staff and Tree Care Crew.
