Hello Neighbors! I've learned of this meeting through my employment at Carnegie Mellon's Heinz School of Public Policy and Management; it is one that will probably be of interest to many who read this list. Below is the information about a meeting to discuss a new initiative for the Pittsburgh Public Schools to establish a school to provide secondary learning opportunities in science and technology to the district's students. The meeting is open to the public: The Pittsburgh Science & Technology Secondary Learning Community: A Community Discussion will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 from 5:30 to 8:30p.m. at Reizenstein School, 129 Denniston Avenue, East Liberty. Learn about plans to open this new school, potentially with 6th - 9th graders in August of 2008. This is an opportunity to gather information about the innovative design and offer your feedback. Pittsburgh Public Schools will present the information and incorporate community feedback into the plans. Parents, students, and anyone interested in public education and high school reform are encouraged to attend. First and foremost I would like to thank the Highland Park Community for the wonderful response to my previous e-mail:) I got a lot of great new residential cleaning customers in Highland Park, and I have met some very nice people:) I am currently looking for new commercial clients for example office buildings ect. We have a great insurance policy, workers compensation, ect. We are not new to the commercial industry and would love to expand into new beginnings with companies. If anyone is interested or knows of anyone who is looking for people to clean there offices or commercially owned facilities I would love to here from you:) Again thanks so much for the great response. Once again, the Pony Rides scheduled for last Sunday have been rescheduled for this coming Sunday, September 16, and will begin in the St.Andrew's Churchyard at around 12:15 p.m.--immediately following the 11 a.m. service. The Coffee Hour reception after the 11 a.m. as well will be a time for us all to give thanks for the gifts Victoria Cole--and Mike and Sasha--have brought to our St. Andrew's family over many years, as we bid them godspeed in their move to New Hampshire later this fall. [Highland Park] [Update.unionproject] Special Email Announcement: Urban Fusion Cafe and Starbucks Introduce Youth Barista Program

Beginning Monday, September 17th, Urban Fusion Café will be serving Starbucks coffee and tea products. The Union Project is proud to announce a partnership with Starbucks for our new Youth Barista Program, an onsite skills training program for young adults. Over the coming year this program will train 30 young men and women aging out of foster care. Forty percent of foster youth end up homeless in their first 2 years out of the system. This program works to change that number locally by providing youth with skills and job placements in café and food service, allowing them to earn a living wage. Starbucks will be donating all coffee, tea, syrups and paper products used in Urban Fusion Café and for training in the Youth Barista Program. Other vital partners for the Youth Barista Program include the Social Innovation Accelerator, FamilyLinks, Kitchens with Missions, and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services. Please join us Friday October 5th from 6-8pm for a free coffee and dessert reception and the official introduction of the Youth Barista Program to our community. FYI: When selling anything, a scout (I can only speak for the boys) should be in Class A uniform.......that is navy shirt for Cub Scouts and beige shirt for Boy Scouts with all appropriate patches, ie. Pack or troop number, US flag, council name. Please don't let the current rash of "fund-raising kids" deter you from purchasing from scouts who may soon be canvassing their own neighborhoods with an adult, selling popcorn - "Trails End Popcorn" to raise money for the pack/troop/themselves to go to summer camp, etc. The popcorn sale is a Boy Scouts of America sponsored fundraiser held across the country at this time of the year only. Two boys just came to my front door, telling me they're raising money for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. They're selling yoga workout cds (!) for $5.00 each. I asked for their Scout ID, and they told me they left it at home. Hi neighbors, Yes, the same two boys have also come to our house on Jackson on numerous occasions (at least 3) , selling those DVD's (today and last week) and even Superballs (last night). It's definitely a problem that these boys are learning to scam at a young age. What worries me more is the safety issue. These boys are young (MUST be under 10 or younger)- They have knocked on our door after 8 at night....I worry about what might happen to these young boys when they are soliciting strangers door-to-door. [Highland Park] kids "fund-raising"

Hi everyone, Today two children on bikes came to my house to ask if we would buy a DVD as part of a fund-raising event for the Boys' and Girls' Club of America. They had only the DVDs (about fitness, with a McDonald's logo on it) and no documentation that the Boys' and Girls' Clubs would be involved in sending little kids door-to-door selling things. I did call Boys' and Girls' Club (a local branch, and then the administrative offices for this area) to double-check that this is not by some fluke actually legitimate. Naturally, it turns out that, like the Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Boys' and Girls' Clubs don't send children out fund-raising to strangers. Just thought folks would want to know. -EL

thanks to everyone (lots of you!) who sent tree service suggestions. we opted for hellmann's tree service --phone # 921-7149. they promptly gave us an estimate, and took out the tree only a few days after we called to accept their bid. the hellman people are fast, thorough, and extremely pleasant. they did no damage to our front yard, and they cleaned up everything perfectly including our neighbor's side walk. their price was the second lowest of the several bids we got, and it wasn't much higher than the lowest. the lowest bid came from a service who couldn't do the work for a month or maybe a litte more. so we're enthusiastic about hellmann's tree service. thanks again, jim bogen
