Hi everyone! My name is Kelly and I'm a fellow resident of Highland Park. I'm 25 years old, I have a BA in Psychology from Grove City College. Since college I have been a Therapeutic Staff Support, doing one on one intensive therapy for children on the autistic spectrum, and then working in child and adolescent psychiatry research working with children with depression and anxiety. I have been babysitting since I was 12 years old and I'm very experienced and comfortable with children of all ages. I am certified in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention Intervention, I have my Child Abuse clearances. I have a 2 year old reliable, safe car and a good drving record. Right now I am in between jobs and despite having a degree and experience, opportunities are hard to come by, so I thought I would see if anyone on the listserve was looking for childcare from someone qualified, trustworthy and in the neighborhood. [Highland Park] a suggestion re: securing valuables in our homes . . .

Recently I caught an episode of a show on The Discovery Channel that advised homeowners on ways to make their homes more secure. (The hosts were former house burglars, so the advice was based on experience.) I found one of their suggestions interesting and relatively easy to do: Install a deadbolt lock on a closet door and replace several of the door's hinge screws with pins that extend into the corresponding holes on the opposite hinge plate. (The pins will prevent someone from slipping out the hinge post and pulling the door away from the frame.) Why? It could be a place where you lock up your critical papers and documents (checks, soc. sec. card, passport, birth certificates, etc.), expensive clothing, laptops, and any other large valuables. Would this prevent a career criminal from getting to your stuff? Probably not. It could, however, help us avoid losing identity documents and other valuables to the "opportunistic criminal" who sees an open window or discovers an unlocked door and the seizes the moment to make a fast grab of our stuff. Just a thought...

We will be serving FREE coffee drinks from our beautiful newly constructed coffee bar in our Great Hall with live musical entertainment and a pottery seconds sale. The Union Project is proud to announce a partnership with Starbucks for our new Youth Barista Program, an onsite skills training program for young adults. Over the coming year this program will train 30 young men and women aging out of foster care. Forty percent of foster youth end up homeless in their first 2 years out of the system. This program works to change that number locally by providing youth with skills and job placements in café and food service, allowing them to earn a living wage. [Highland Park] Tonight's HPCC Meeting & House Tour Volunteer Meeting

Dear Highland Parkers – I wanted to remind everyone about tonight’s HPCC Board Meeting, starting at 7:00 PM, at St. Andrews on Hampton Street. We have several different things being discussed this evening, and actually starting at 6:30 PM is the volunteer meeting for the Highland Park House Tour, which will be meeting downstairs in the room below the normal meeting room. Yes, we still need more people to volunteer for the tour to staff our neighbors’ houses. There are two different shifts that are available, and for those volunteering, they shall get a free ticket allowing them to view the other homes on the tour during the opposite shift then they are volunteering for. This year’s theme is “Renovation and Restoration”, and we are showing houses in the neighborhood that have undergone a lot of work !!! There are fifteen homes on the tour with some of the houses having been on before, and the continued efforts are amazing. The shift times are from 10:45 AM until 2:00 PM, and 1:45 PM until 5:00 PM on Saturday, 29 SEP 07. Should you be interested, please contact my wife, Brigette, at her number, (412) 363-6869. At our monthly Board Meeting we shall be voting in Officers and Board Members for the 2008 term. We have had an extremely involved and productive summer showing off Highland Park, and it is continuing on this fall. Michael Eversmeyer will be speaking on the Historic Neighborhood Status that Highland Park has just received, and has a slide presentation showing the different styles of houses that are neighborhood can boast of, and this ties in nicely with the House Tour next week. Bob Staresinic shall be talking on the Clean-up Pittsburgh Commission that we shall be participating in 12 – 14 OCT 07. Can anyone recommend a dojo that would teach in a manner consistent with our family's non-violent values by building the confidence that can help one avoid the need to fight and teaching fighting only as a defense of last resort?
