Dear Neighbors That was my tree, and as a Master Gardener and an environmentalist, taking that tree down, broke no one's heart more than mine. I did get a citation from the city about the side walk, which means that some one called the city and asked that the tripping hazard be removed. When I called the city forestry service to deal with the citation, they insisted the tree come down. I do plan to make 2 wide planting beds and plant 2 new trees. The city now has a list of approved trees for sidewalks. [Highland Park] Reputable Used car dealers compilation

Earlier this year, many folks responded to my question for reputable used car dealers. I'm still in transition but recently saw someone else asked the same question. So I compiled their answers. Thanks to all who responded! Suzi pghgurl30(a)yahoo.com Last summer Fred Rongier of BMW on Baum Blvd found a pristine used Volvo for me. He sells really fancy cars, which are lovely but not what I wanted, but he gets great cars as trade-ins. You might call him, 412-292-2496. Tell him I referred you. Kathy Miller My husband had a good experience buying a used Subaru from #1 Cochran in Moroeville. His salesman wasn't pushy at all and allowed him to keep the car over night while we waited for our bank's loan paperwork to arrive. Beth Skinner I have bought my past 2 cars from Enterprise Car Sales. They are usually late model cars (i.e. 1.5 to 2 years old) which they take from their fleet while they’re still in good shape. They usually have around 25-30 thousand miles on them. I haven’t had to make any repairs other than the usual maintenance from wear and tear (i.e. brakes, tires). Their cars are sold for blue book value, based on the make and model, age, and mileage. I have used the North Versailles location on both occasions (ask for Dave Freeman). My neighbors have also bought all of their cars (usually Toyotas & Nissans) for the past 10 years from the airport location. They have dealt with someone named Brooke Bertuca. Good Luck! Tower Auto on Freeport Road sells used, high end cars but they also have cheaper models that they take in on trade. I have bought my 2 most recent cars there; a Camry and an Altima. Ask for Jared. I have purchased 2 Hondas from Valley Honda in Monroeville and both involved a trade in. One of the cars I purchased was brand new, the other a used car - a lease car whose lease was up. I still have it after 10 years. Valley Honda was cheaper than Shadyside Honda (McKean). We have been treated with excellent Customer Service with Valley and I will go back again any time. My husband's mother also purchases her Hondas from Valley. AND, they are right next to Moio's Bakery!!! The owner bought back the first one and fixed it up because he is also a mechanic. The second one was a 1990 Pontiac which his wife had been driving and which I bought for about $2400 in 2001 and drove until last year. (2400/6 = 400 yr !) When I had a minor problem with the car I'd bought there, Kenny himself called me and resolved the situation! Good luck, Claudette Kulkarni I am very happy with the people at Cochran and will return there first when we car shop. We got a good car for Damien at Kenny Ross Chev in Cranberry, also. The regular dealerships have a reputation to keep and I think they're more responsive. I recommend both Cochran and Ross but Cochran has the most respectful salespeople when I go there alone. Since I'm the one that makes the final decisions and I pay the bills and manage our budget, I appreciate that respect that I didn't find quite the same anywhere else. And there were some good used car deals because they only take the best. Cheryl This is a small family owned business but they do often have some used vehicles, and also might do trade ins. [Highland Park] tree taken for aggressive root system

At the suggestion of frenchjap(a)comcast.net, who gave me the direct phone number, I called the city's Forestry Dept. The man I spoke to there said the tree was taken down because it had an aggressive root system that had raised the sidewalk, causing a tripping hazard. Deb Polk

The City Forestry Division and the Shade Tree Commission have provided a database of trees in the city, where one may find a lot of information about specific trees. [Highland Park] Advice: National Register of Historic Places

Hi: I am a Highland Park resident and a history professor at Robert Morris University. I am currently working (on behalf of RMU) with a community in Moon Township on getting that neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After recalling our own neighborhood's recent success in gaining this listing (congrats!) I thought it would be terrific to meet with whomever from the community who worked on this is willing to share any advice or wisdom in completing the application. My own area of specialty is urban history, but I've never worked on a preservation project before, so as a novice in this field, I'd be very obliged to hear advice or war stories or anything else about the process. I emailed the Highland Park CDC directly, at an address I found on the web, but it bounced back to me. I'm assuming some CDC folks participate in this forum. Anyone who was involved with this, feel free to respond at your convenience. Thanks!
