Dear Neighbors, We are planning a Halloween costume parade and contest at the Highland Park fountain on Saturday, October 31st from 3:30 p.m. until about 5:00 p.m. The kids can show off their costumes while parading around the fountain and parents can take photos. We'll be giving out prizes in various categories & don't worry, every child will get a prize! We will provide pizza and drinks so you don't have to worry about having time to feed the kids before heading out for trick or treating. If it rains, well, we'll get back to you on that... [Highland Park] Farmers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty Update

Hello Neighbors It has been two weeks since I have provided an update (I wanted to give you a break), but I figured I should get cracking because we will have a lot of great stuff at the market this week. I have been really impressed with the variety and quality of produce over the last few weeks. And the prices are really excellent this time of year. Here are some of the highlights.... The market should be your center for Halloween items and decorations. There are beautiful pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, and corn stocks. I can't believe the different varieties of gourds that the famers are growing these days- the "uglier" the better. A great variety of edible fall vegetables- including many varieties of squash. These squash store very well, they will last for months in a cellar or another cool place. Brussels sprouts will appear for the first time this Saturday. Apples are in their prime, so stop by the Kistaco stand for a wide variety of apples, for both cooking and eating. Pick up a basket and make some apple sauce for the winter. The cider is flowing and is top notch in flavor. Rick Zang is bringing fresh cranberries from Wisconsin. Theses are very high quality fresh berries that can be used for a variety of uses. I will be using them to make home made fresh cranberry juice that we will sell at the Kew Park Coffee Bar. I am not sure exactly what specials the Kennedy's will have this week- but I think you can count on their usual selection of locally raised chicken, beef and pork. Any one who was lucky enough to get some of the veal 2 weeks ago really had a treat. Feel free to call out to the farm at 724-898-2316. Call Monday through Friday, 9 am until 9 pm. There is a really nice variety of prepared foods and baked goods available at the market. Many are items that are just a little bit different than items you can get elsewhere. Make things easy on yourself and pick up a few. I just spoke with Peter Williams from the Kew Park Farm and he told me they had a near hurricane last week in Jamaica. But fortunately the crop was spared and survived really well. He expects an excellent crop this year both in volume and quality. The beans are ripening very slowly, which is important for growing high quality coffee. The harvest starts in about 6 weeks. Please stop by the market this Saturday and visit us at the Kew Park Coffee Bar for a Jamaican coffee or fresh squeezed juice. We have fresh whole beans for sale. The agent wil check back and if the chairs are less than 30, and not properly positioned, he will cite them for it. I had some complaints about this place from Highland Park residents about a lack of seating and the sales of individual bottles. The deli does have a seating area (where the 30 chair issue comes into play) with seven tables and they are allowed to sell individual bottles of beer/alcohol. The can sell up to 2 six packs but no more than 2 six packs. So, any sale less than 12 bottles is legal. I did not forget about the residents' complaint about this deli, but it required several weeks to get an agent to conduct the routine inspection. I still am not on the Highland Park e mail list, so can you please forward this to the residents so they are aware of this inspection being conducted. thank you Tim O'Connor Zone 5

So much fun was had carving clay pumpkins two weekends ago that we are bringing it back THIS SATURDAY from 11:30am-2:30pm. Stop in anytime. No registration is necessary. Cost is $25 for smallish ones and $40 for largish ones. Once fired, they can withstand the elements and can be used year after year. Please join us.
