They worked fine, but I got tired of trying to mess with the elastic on two separate covers, so I bought one to fit both chaises at once without elastic. Hello Neighbors! This Thursday, Sept 19, is the monthly HPCC Community Meeting at 7 pm at St. Andrew's Church. The theme is *waste *- and to encourage people to reduce their waste, *we will be giving HPCC tote bags to everyone that attends* (limit one per household). In addition to our regular Zone 5 police update, we will hear from: - *Highland Park resident Sabrina Culyba*, who will give a behind-the-scenes look at recycling, answering questions about what can and can’t be recycled in Pittsburgh, and how you can go beyond recycling limitations. She will also provide ideas for how individuals can reduce their plastics waste and discuss efforts to help businesses reduce their use of single-use plastics. Sabrina operates Recycle This Pittsburgh and directs Humane Action Pittsburgh’s No Plastic Please campaign. - *HPCC Board Member Justin Sandherr*, who will be signing up volunteers for the Garbage Olympics on 9/21, when neighborhoods all across the city will have competing clean-ups to see who can pick up the most trash. The competition will be judged by the Clean Pittsburgh Commission. There will be prizes for most trash collected as well as strangest item found and other surprises. *Published:* 09.12.2019 *Contact:* Chris Togneri Public Information Officer Public Safety 412-627-3552 chris.togneri(a)pittsburghpa.gov Crime Analysis: Downtown PITTSBURGH, PA (Sept. 12, 2019) -- In response to multiple media inquiries regarding crime statistics in the Central Business District, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police’s Crime Analysis Unit has compiled a comprehensive look at calls for service and crime in the area over the last five years. The City of Pittsburgh, Public Safety and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police take any and all crime in any part of the city seriously. However, we understand the recent scrutiny on Downtown and the Cultural District following four stabbings, including one fatal, in August. Police have increased patrols Downtown, an effort that resulted in an immediate arrest following every August stabbing. Some analysis highlights: -- Total Part 1 crimes for the first 8 months of the year 2019 are essentially unchanged from the 5 year average for the same time period 2014-2018 -- Part 1 Property crimes show a 4% decrease compared to the 5 year average -- August 2019 Part 1 Crimes shows a 10% decrease from the average August over the last 5 years -- Four (4) aggravated assaults in August are slightly higher than the 5 year average of 3.75 -- Robberies were down 67% at 3, compared to the average of 9 robberies at this point in the year over the last 5 years. -- Over the last 5 years, violent crimes have been more likely to occur between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. View the full report here <http://apps.pittsburghpa.gov/redtail/images/7038_Downtown_Crime_Stats.pdf> Regarding the Downtown substation, it is open daily from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. and often stays open until midnight or later during large events Downtown. A desk officer is on shift every day during those hours. In addition to the desk officer, there are a number of officers on patrol from the substation. Their exact numbers vary depending on need. For officers assigned to the substation, their primary responsibility is to perform foot patrols in the Downtown core. Long-overdue work on the reservoir's parapet wall will begin this week. Unfortunately that means that the reservoir walkway will be closed until sometime in Spring 2020. The HPCC asked PWSA if it was possible to do the work in stages so that the public could access part of the walkway during the project, but as explained in the press release below, that option was not feasible due to public safety and cost concerns. The pedestrian lane on Reservoir Drive will remain open for walkers. In the Spring, the HPCC will host a reopening celebration. Until then, we would appreciate everyone's patience, knowing that in the end, the reservoir will be an even lovelier feature in our beloved park! The temporary closure of the walkway is needed to restore the parapet wall and maintain public safety during construction. Pittsburgh, PA - On Monday, September 16, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority’s construction crews will start construction to restore the parapet wall around the Highland I Reservoir. To complete the project as quickly as possible and to maintain public safety, the walkway will be closed during construction and will reopen next spring. The installation of the fencing will begin on Tuesday, September 17. “We realize that many are disappointed by its closure and we apologize for the inconvenience,” stated Robert Weimar Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority. “We considered several options to complete the project and concluded that the full closure of the walkway is the most efficient way to expedite the work, manage costs, and ensure the safety of the public.” The full closure of the walkway is also supported by the City’s Department of Public Works. This approach gives the contractor the ability to stage the site, mobilize construction, and complete the work as quickly as possible. Partial closure or doing the project in phases will add more time and expense to the construction. Ensuring the safety of the public during any construction project is of the utmost importance. To prevent the risk of unforeseen accidents, it is in everyone’s best interest to close the walkway during this time. Although the walkway around the reservoir will be closed, park users will still have full use of the pedestrian lane along Reservoir Drive. Why is the restoration necessary? The parapet wall is the low protective barrier around the perimeter of the uncovered reservoir. Over time, due to the age and deterioration of the concrete, holes have formed in the wall. Ducks and other wildlife burrow into it and wade into the reservoir. Once inside, they cannot get out. This is not safe for local wildlife and it presents several concerns about the quality and safety of our drinking water. The improvements to the wall will secure its perimeter, prevent most wildlife from wading into this source of drinking water, and will enhance its overall appearance. Securing the Highland I Reservoir The restoration of the parapet wall is part of a series of projects to secure the reservoir, improve water quality, and to maintain it as a public amenity. In addition to the parapet wall restoration, the Highland I Reservoir security improvements <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001un1RZYeafa17s5Jk69lyX-x48SeLhIP3mZctpK5dFEyf…> include the addition of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection at the Membrane Filtration Plant (MFP), security cameras to provide a 360-degree view of the reservoir, bollards to restrict private vehicular access, and renovation of the former chlorination building into a new security monitoring facility. The security improvements to the Highland I Reservoir are required by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to meet stricter state water quality standards and will provide the security that is needed to maintain the open reservoir. The UV disinfection and installation of the bollards and security cameras were completed in August. The reservoir was taken out of service in 2017 due to state required changes to our operating permit. The security improvements are part of our Capital Improvement Program and cost nearly $7 million. These projects were approved by the Art Commission of Pittsburgh and took place in coordination with Councilmember Deborah Gross, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the Highland Park Community Council, and the Highland Park Community Development Corporation.
