The Highland Park Garden Club ushers in our fall series of garden club meetings with a two-part talk by master gardener, Jamie C. This summer, Jamie crossed the equator to spend a number of weeks traveling around Southern Africa. There, she was captivated by the unusual and majestic trees that thrive in those southern African lands. Some are massive and otherworldly, others are amusing, all are quite different to what we’re used to seeing in the northern hemisphere. Jamie will take us on a pictorial tour of a few of these striking trees and will explain their medicinal, lethal, and self-preservation properties. In part two, *Gardening Doesn’t Stop in the Fall*, Jamie will lead us through the calendar year with a month-by-month guide filled with timely tips on how to keep our gardens looking fabulous all year long. We meet on Saturday September 21, 2019 10:00 AM to noon at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (616 N. Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh 15206), Room 215, Long Hall. Our meetings are open to all. We have some materials that were used to hold screens on a porch that we no longer need. We're wondering if anyone can use them and we would be happy to give them away. October 15th at Choderwood (just 10 mins away) will be a fundraiser and night of memory for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness day. I am sure it will be a beautiful night for all, for an incredible cause. Free tote bags at this week's HPCC Community Meeting!

Hello Neighbors! Thursday, Sept 19, is the monthly HPCC Community Meeting at 7 pm at St. Andrew's Church. The theme is *waste *- and to encourage people to reduce their waste, *we will be giving HPCC tote bags to everyone that attends* (limit one per household). In addition to our regular Zone 5 police update, we will hear from: - *Highland Park resident Sabrina Culyba*, who will give a behind-the-scenes look at recycling, answering questions about what can and can’t be recycled in Pittsburgh, and how you can go beyond recycling limitations. She will also provide ideas for how individuals can reduce their plastics waste and discuss efforts to help businesses reduce their use of single-use plastics. Sabrina operates Recycle This Pittsburgh and directs Humane Action Pittsburgh’s No Plastic Please campaign. - *HPCC Board Member Justin Sandherr*, who will be signing up volunteers for the Garbage Olympics on 9/21, when neighborhoods all across the city will have competing clean-ups to see who can pick up the most trash. The competition will be judged by the Clean Pittsburgh Commission. There will be prizes for most trash collected as well as strangest item found and other surprises. The closing ceremonies (food provided) at Threadbare Cider and Mead kick off at noon! - *HPCC President Stephanie Walsh*, who will provide information and ask for a vote on proposed updates to our organization's bylaws intended to streamline processes and bring them in line with current best practices. The proposed changes are posted on our website - https://hpccpgh.org/ . Pizza and a kid's activity table will be provided & there will be time for socializing after the meeting.
