Melissa Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchasedCocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.' This Snopes site gives the following information:http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ' Theobromine' . It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of th eobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffei n e and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed th e presence of lethal amounts of theobromine. PLEASE GIVE THIS THE WIDEST DISTRIBUTION! !!

Have you been wanting to get involved in Highland Park community but didn't know how? Maybe you weren't sure what you could do or how much time you could give. GOOD NEWS! There are several volunteer opportunities opening up this spring. The Highland Park Community Council has several events lined up and we are looking for people willing to give us a hand. Whether you want to give and hour or take on an event, or help on an as needed basis, there is a spot for you. Upcoming events include: 1)Spring childrens event 2) the Bryant Street Festival for which we need help with set up, clean up, advertising, lining up artists and more. 3) Marathon activities 4)Yard Sale - we are looking for a new organizer. The prior chairperson will be available to talk to you about prior years experiences. 5)Reservoir of Jazz - helping out as needed on a weekly basis in August. Come to the next HPCC meeting Thursday February 19th at 7:00 pm at St Andrew's church to learn more or ask questions. OR reply to this email and I will be glad to give more info. [Highland Park] Wonderful new play

Last night we saw "A Moon to Dance By" at the Pgh. Playhouse which stars Jane Alexander and is about the lover of D.H. Lawrence who left her family to live with Lawrence (and after his death, another love). Her son, whom she left when he was a boy, comes to Taos, NM to see and confront his mother. It is a moving, absorbing, riveting, lovely and perfect new play written by a CMU graduate and is directed by Jane Alexander's husband. Jane Alexander, to me, is best known for playing Eleanor Roosevelt in "Eleanor and Franklin," the 1970's tv movie. She is still a beautiful actress. We just wanted to recommend highly, this excellent play. It continues through next weekend. --
