St. Andreans Marilyn Evert and Al Mann, two of the authors of the just-released "Pittsburgh's East Liberty Valley" (see below), will be our featured presenters at Coffee and Conversation this Sunday, January 20. Copies of the book will be available for purchase (and authorial inscription!) Hope to see you there. <<The long-awaited book Pittsburgh's East Liberty Valley has been issued by Arcadia Publishing and will be available in about a week. It was written by members of the East End/East Liberty Historical Society, a non-profit organization. The book includes major contributions from many area residents, who generously loaned us images and provided significant editorial help. You will want to have copies to be reminded of the great history and future potential of our area, as well as rare photographs of your favorite neighborhood landmarks, some gone and some still standing. Hello Highland Park, During the late evening of January 12, 2008, Highland Park residents experienced a rash of "theft from autos" on the following streets: Bunkerhill, Bryant, Wellesley, Beverly Place and Callowhill. The suspects broke the vents windows, stealing cash and CDs. If any residents observed or heard anything unusual, please contact Zone 5. Reminder: please do not secure items in your vehicle. [Highland Park] community gardens

The ability of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to successfully maintain 140 community gardens hinges on the involvement of its volunteers. Unlike public garden and beautification programs in other cities, all of the flower gardens blooming throughout our region are planted and maintained by volunteers. Two of our most visible gardens, located in the Highland Park area, are in need of new maintainers. The first one is located at Allegheny River Blvd & Washington Blvd, and the second is at the Highland Park Bridge at Butler St. Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is looking for an interested person or group to volunteers to be the garden steward. Our Garden Stewards take care of a garden from the spring planting until the end of the October. We are hopeful that someone from your neighborhood might be interested in helping. I am enclosing a garden steward description as well as some general information about our Community Gardens program. Let me know if you or anyone you know might be interested. I will be glad to talk with you. Also if you have a group that would like to help with the plantings we will need around 5,000 volunteers this May to plant the gardens. We can schedule a planting almost any day in May. It is a one time commitment for around 4 hours. It is something that is fun for, family , school, scouts, neighborhood group to get involved in.
