Hello! All interested parents are invited to join us with your children for our first playgroup. Our first playgroup is planned this coming weekend, Saturday January 19th at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Hampton (www.standrewspgh.org) The third Saturday of each month, from 9:00 am until 10:30 am, the upstairs chapel and nursery space is reserved for our group. Many thanks to BruceR, rector of St. Andrew's for allowing us to use this space! I am hoping our first meeting will also be a brainstorming session for a vision of where we can grow with the group. As I have shared in previous emails, the Chicago neighborhood from where we moved in June 2007, had a wonderful, diverse Parenting Support Network (PSN). This served as a resource for neighborhood parents, a network to welcome new neighbors with children and also to welcome current neighbors who become new parents. It grew over the years to include playgroups on weekdays and weekends to include groups of different ages. Leesa Phaneuf has already initiated the playgroup that is presently held during the weekdays. Hopefully our efforts and ideas combined as a community will grow to become a wealth of blessing to the parents of Highland Park. Looking forward to meeting you. [Highland Park] Martial Arts Instruction for Kids?

Both of my boys, ages 10 and 7 1/2 are interested in "Karate." My husband and I would like to know if anyone has recommendations for a good studio for working with kids on some sort of martial arts. The boys want kicking and jumping, and we are assuming that discipline and self-control are part of the package, but would want a do jo (?) (studio) that teaches responsible control. Does anyone have experience with a good option for kids? We'd prefer something in the area to minimize the amount of running around required. Many thanks in advance, Heather Conrad

Because of his friendly nature, I believe he has a loving owner and he is just lost. He is very sweet and is good with kids as well as other dogs (we have 3). We would like to reunite him with his owner or find a new home for him. We cannot keep him too long, as my daughter is already starting to get attached to him and we are not able to keep him. He is white and caramel colored, with golden eyes. He does not appear to be neutered. He is full grown but I could not guess his age. She found him at the intersection of Stanton Ave and Chislett St. We have checked all of the lost dog sights and did not find anything about him. We did not post because I am not sure how long we are able to keep him. I did report him to Animal Friends and ARL on their lost/found list. [Highland Park] East End Golf League

Hi, I run a small golf league that plays every Wednesday night at Grandview Golf Club in Forest Hills. We play weekly matches starting around 5:15 PM, and we always have a good time! We do have several openings for this year, any skill level. The dues are slight, (around 50$) - credited to an outing at the end of the year. There's a great buffet at Grandview where most of us usually stay and eat and drink and be merry! [Highland Park] What to do when the school vans speed...

Hello fellow frustrated residents who experience disregard for the school zone at Dillworth and Heberton/Meadows. This morning as I stopped at the intersection on Stanton Ave heading across Heberton/Meadows toward Highland, a SCHOOL VAN sped through the stop sign at Meadows (not stopping at all) and turned left onto Stanton at a disturbing speed. I was in disbelief. Drivers often skim that intersection and treat the stop signs as optional, however, this was at 9:20 AM, some children were still about, the markers were still in the cross-walks, and this was a school van. My question is: How is this type of negligence kept in balance? I did record the van license number, it's van number and the color of the van. I caught a glimpse of the 2 females in the driver/passenger seat, but I'm not sure where to begin. Is the van line run by a private company or by the school district? It made me very angry to see this blatent disregard for safety. The fact that it was a school van brought my thoughts to post here. Thanks for comments.
