This Saturday, September 30th, the Union Project is hosting the very first RIB COOK-OFF! Celebrity judges, a very unique crowning ceremony for the winner, aka, "Dutch or Duchess of Ribs" and live music is just some of what you can expect from this event. That's not all- the winner gets a spot as our only *BBQ preferred vendor* and a spot to cook and sell ribs next year from May-September- RENT FREE! So, come and join us Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Union Project and keep your eyes open for an entry form to be posted to our website. Only one weekend intensive remains before Glass Action! takes over. Glass Action, Union Project’s newest social enterprise, will be taking over the stained glass work in the late fall of 2006. Open Studio Class #6C15 Join our own Union Project clay artists and others in the open studio. No formal instruction will take place, but students are invited to come and work in a cooperative atmosphere. We can all “learn by osmosis”. Open studio work times will be scheduled in 8-week sessions. You could pay by the week, at $15/week, or you may sign up for the whole 8 weeks for $100, which represents a $20 savings for you. Pouring Pots Class #6C17 Learn to make teapots, pitchers, decanters and more! Students will explore a variety of methods for creating pouring pots, designing for both proper function and inviting aesthetics. Students who are new to the potter’s wheel will also receive one-on-one instruction for basic wheel-throwing techniques. And this class wraps up just in time for holiday gift-giving! Cost for this class is $175. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We’re starting to recruit volunteers for our annual Christmas Tree Sale, beginning at the end of November. [Highland Park] Road Work on Collins Street

Does anyone know how long the northbound lanes of Collins St. between Penn Circle North and East Liberty Blvd. will be closed? I've called the mayor's service center twice but have not heard back yet. I also asked them to consider closing the southbound lanes and opening up the northbound lanes for easier access to Highland Park and to Negley Run Road. Thanks for any info.

Come down Saturday, Sept. 30th from 11am to 3pm at Union Project (at the corner of Stanton Ave. and Negley Ave.) Sponsored by Whole Foods and the Union Project, this event is designed to give local rib chefs a chance to compete for prizes and the community to come together for an afternoon of music and fun. Local celebrities will be judging this year’s ribs while Pittsburgh’s own fabulous soul and funk band, “The World of Soul” and DJ Omar-Abdul provide entertainment. Event attendees will have a chance to win a free gas grill, in addition to sampling the competing chefs’ culinary skills. Tickets will be sold at the door. A READING BY LOCAL AUTHOR, ANNE BARNES Local author, Anne Barnes, has been invited by the Kiwanis Club of East Liberty to give a reading from her short stories at the Union Project cafe this Thursday, September 28th. Everyone is invited. We'll gather at 5:30 PM. The program begins at 5:45 PM. This program will give us an opportunity to enjoy one of the pleasures of childhood as we listen to Anne breathe life into her characters and transport us with them into familiar, yet provocative settings. Following her reading, Anne will be available for Q and A. She was recently published in the local literary Paper Street Press and will have copies available to purchase. Her short stories have been published or are forthcoming in several literary magazines, including The Distillery: New Voices of the South; Palo Alto Review; Paper Street Press; Whiskey Island Magazine (Cleveland State University Press); and Wisconsin Review. Anne has masters' degrees in both fine arts (Maryland Institute of Art) and social work (University of Maryland) and is an experienced clinical social worker and art teacher. She lives in Pittsburgh with her husband and their yellow lab, Gracie. Please join us this Thursday at the Union Station Cafe, on the corner of Stanton and N. Negley Avenues,for this stimulating program. In addition to providing regular programs at the Union Station Cafe, the Kiwanis Club of East Liberty sponsors a children's service club at Fulton Academy, has read to children at the Eastminster Childcare, and collects children's books and donates them to local organizations.
