ISSUES ON AGING IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Caring for the elders in our community is the topic of the program at the Union Project cafe this Thursday, September 14th at 5:45 PM. Everyone is welcome! Sharyn Rubens, the Volunteer and Community Relations Co-ordinator for the Jewish Association on Aging (JAA) and Barbara Milch, the Volunteer Co-ordinator and Trainer for Sivitz Hospice have been invited by the Kiwanis Club of East Liberty to talk about their organization and how it impacts the community. They are eager to speak about current trends regarding the elderly and to take questions. The JAA serves the older population of the Greater Pittsburgh community, their families, and their caregivers using a comprehensive network of quality services and facilities that maximize the independence of the aging population. This non-denominational organization is currently celebrating their 100th year of service to the community through a continuum of care that includes the Charles Morris Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; two assisted living facilities, an Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, two day care programs for individuals with memory impairment, Sivitz Hospice, and a kosher Meals on Wheels operation. The Union Project is located at the corner of Stanton and N. Negley Aves. The Union Station Cafe is located on the N. Negley side of the building. Here are all the responses I received about tree trimmers (inform me of any omissions). Thanks to all who responded! Pasted below & attached in Word format. --YH HIGHLAND PARK NEIGHBORHOOD LISTSERV RECOMMENDED TREE TRIMMERS We used Jungle Jim's in Monroeville to remove a very large white pine, but it was 6-8 years ago. Their price was best and they did very good, quick work, maybe just a little short on clean up. More recently used Pittsburgh Tree Service [check the name] and they were excellent, price was about mid-range. * We've used Davey and they have been great. There not the cheapest company (or the most expensive) but they are the most professional and the most caring folks we've worked with. * I used William Boulware last year to remove a dead tree in my back yard. He charged 380 dollars to cut it down and haul it away. Did a very nice job. His number is 412-363-7088. * Over the years, I've used Ackerman Tree Service (owner is Bart) and his server is WONDERFUL. 412-521-1938 * I recently had a large Norway Maple taken down. We had Layhew's Tree service do it and we are happy with the price and their work. They were on time and did the job in one afternoon. I can't find my bill, but I think their number is (724) 224-7061. I could not find them in the yellow pages, either. * Davey Tree is the Nationally Recognized Leader and most knowledgeable tree-service company in the U.S. However, there are a good number of very reputable local Tree-Service companies in our area. The one I might recommend based on personal observation of their high quality field work and Professionalism is: Tuffy's Tree Service 2047 Haymaker Rd. Monroeville, PA 15146 412-856-0956 412-951-8835(cell) Tom "Tuffy" Weigner-Owner Note: Above recommendation is based on a professional evaluation of Tree Service Companies serving the Pittsburgh area and in no way is an endorsement of any services that a commercial customer may choose to contract for. Most Sincerely, Bruce Brantley Landscape Design & Maintenance Instructor/Consultant Community College of Allegheny County * I've used Adler Tree Service several times for large tree trimming and removal of a dead tree—they do a great job, are always the lowest bidder, and are very courteous. Ask for Dominic, a former Morningside resident when you call. The number is (724) 443-3744. * THree Rivers Tree Removal is great. * I liked BJ Tree Service; all they have done for me so far is removal of a bunch of hedges, two large blue spruce and some hedges - no planting or trimming. I also liked Keelen Bros in Aspinwall; they took down a large pine tree when a storm knocked down it's stronger, dominant neighbor. Joel is a good guy and the only reason I hired BJ Tree instead was because they offered a lower price when I was broke. Both of them had knowledgeable, pleasant staff. * Three Rivers Tree Removal wasn't cheap, but they were fast and good. They trimmed 5 huge sycamores all the way to the top for about $1,000. * We like Bartlett because we know and trust someone who works for them (at the sales level, not a hands-on worker, but he knows his stuff very well). They've done different kinds of service for us for a couple of years. Bartlett does a lot of work for Phipps Conservatory. They may charge a bit more than Davey, however. * We have had good luck with Keelen Brothers (412) 781-3415. When we lived in O'hara we had a microburst come through and tear up over a dozen trees and Keelen Bros were priced well and did good work. We have used them once while in Highland Park, but just to take away brush. * We would recommend Steve Miller at Bartlett Tree Service, 800-232-8223. The company is committed to preserving trees through careful maintenance. Steve Miller had contacts with landscape engineers who helped assess damage to our property. We found Steve Miller to be a bit more assertive in suggesting methods to repair damage to soil and to trim to maintain, than we found Davey Tree. Ron Hegner at Davey Tree is, however, very responsive (returning phone calls, coming out to discuss plans). We used the Gibsonia office for Davey; that is: 724-444-8733. I would recommend contacting both people at both companies. Neither is inexpensive, but if you care about trees, either would be worth it. * Over the years, I have used Blystone and Bowden Tree Service. They have done an excellent job, always give an estimate ahead of time, and are very reasonable. 412-922-9488. I highly recommend them! * Hi, My fiancee and I just recently had a fallen tree cut up and removed by Three Rivers Tree Removal. They were fast and cleaned up very well. Their price was lower than 3 others that we received estimates from. Their phone numbers are 412-422-6201 and 412-464-1298. Dan is the guy you will deal with. They are insured and won't hesitate to send proof of such to you. *

Hi, I just moved into an appartment and have some things that just aren't fitting: -A small, round, wooden table (perfect for a kids playroom) -4 dining room table chairs available after September 23rd (not sure where the table went, but the chairs somehow ended in my posession) they are metal with a black seat- I have to admit they're not the prettiest, but completley sturdy -random assortment of latex paints- all opened and used, but they make for a fun project (I have green, pink, red, purple, white, and yellow)... if no takers, i'm going to take them to the recycling drop-off on the 16th If anyone is interested, let me know.
