Hi there, If you're so inclined, please pass this along to friends, colleagues and partners. Thanks! Come one, come all! Volunteers needed! The Pennsylvania Resources Council needs your help at its collection for "hard to recycle" items on Saturday, July 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Taking place at Construction Junction (214 N. Lexington Street, East End--Pittsburgh), the event calls for residents to drop off cell phones, computer equipment, latex paint, tires, large appliances, phone books, bottles, cans and other items. All materials will be refurbished, recycled, or safely disposed of. A nominal fee will be charged for some, but not all items. PRC needs your help to unload material from vehicles and to direct traffic in the parking lot. Refreshments will be provided by Whole Foods Market. Additionally, all volunteers will receive a coupon for one free hour of kayaking courtesy of Kayak Pittsburgh. Hello, everyone, I was wondering if anybody was aware of a good, reliable service that will essentially be a delivery service for your kids? I've got a couple of times this summer when I and my husband are both busy at work, and one or both of my sons will need to move from one summer camp to another. I'm pretty sure that I had heard about a similar service in a previous place we've lived, but can't seem to find anything for Pittsburgh. Thank you in advance for any leads you can offer. [Highland Park] Walk in the Woods in Highland Park

Please join me for a walk in Highland Park on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 starting at 6:30 pm at the fountain (Highland Avenue entrance to the park) and lasting about 2 hours. We'll definitely hit a new trail or two on this walk! Keep an eye on the weather report: the weather report for Wednesday is mixed right now so it could be rainy (and muddy!). If there is a thunderstorm or heavy rain we will cancel the walk. Please note that information published in the Parks Conservancy newsletter is wrong again: the walks in Highland Park are on the *3rd* Wednesdays throughout the summer this year. The dates are correct on their web site: <http://www.pittsburghparks.org/> This walk is just one in a series of the weekly "Walks in the Woods" in the four major Pittsburgh parks sponsored by the PPC. The others are in Schenley Park on the 1st Wednesdays, Riverview Park on the 2nd Wednesdays, and Frick Park on the 4th Wednesdays. Rudy

[Highland Park] Jackson St. bikes, prowlers, etc.

Dear Jackson St. Neighbors, Summer has been exciting so far on Jackson St. At the end of May I greeted two unfamiliar African American teens as they walked past my house. Two minutes later someone called to tell me they were riding down the street on my kid's bikes. In a fit of anger I sped over to Larimar, found the kids, yelled at them and took my bikes back. (I'm not sure I would do that again.) Two days ago, another set of teens (probably 14 years old) pushed an 8-year-old neighbor kid off of his bike. His father also chased these kids down and got the bike back. These kids, however, threatened to come back and kill the dad. In my mind this bike theft involved assault, theft and threats. Finally, on this same day (or morning I guess...about 1am...June 21) three older teens were caught and actually arrested behind some houses on the 6300 block of Jackson after stealing some bikes. They were arrested for "prowling" I think. Nice job by the Pittsburgh Police. Anyway, it is challenging (and wonderful) living on a racially-mixed street with so many kids. Somehow, without being suspect and/or racist, we need to keep our eyes open to unfamiliar kids, keep an eye on our kids, and stay in communcation with each other as much as possible.
