Special Announcement from the Pennsylvania Resources Council... Waiting for an excuse to clean out the house? Now's your chance. The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) is hosting its final "hard to recycle" collection for the 2005 season. Individuals may drop off electronic equipment (including computers and cell phones), rimless passenger tires, large appliances, and latex paint for a nominal fee. (No oil based paint products, please!) WHEN: Saturday, September 17 from 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM WHERE: Construction Junction, 214 N. Lexington Street, Pittsburgh, 15208 (N. Point Breeze) *Free Best Buy Gift Cards (while supplies last) will be given to individuals who drop off electronics!* All materials collected will be refurbished, recycled, or safely disposed of. Although PRC will accept appliances at Construction Junction, individuals may also drop off only appliances at Appliance Warehouse (523 Bingham St.-South Side) during the same timeframe for the same fees. Last night, at 9:00, directly beneath a streetlight, three black, teenage boys attempted to steal my neighbor's car. Luckily he was looking out a window at the time and startled them into leaving. Not before they had put a brick through the driver's side window and broken his ignition. They sped away in a dark convertible. The police officers who responded told us that the convertible the boys had been driving had already been discovered, abandoned. A man who lives a block away on Euclid, came down to report that the three boys had also attempted to break into his car. All three cars were Chryslers. The officer told us that Chryslers have been targeted because it's relatively well known how to jump start them. No one has been apprehended. Although the Jeep was locked, the thieves were able to make off with the vehicle by simply breaking a back window and starting the ignition with a screw driver. You may wish to consider augmenting your vehicle's security with a "club" or other anti-theft device. The fourth annual "Run for Literacy 5K" will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2005, in Highland Park. Race Day Registration: Adults: $17.00. Children 12 and under: $9.00 Special Prizes will go to the top male and top female finishers. Prizes will be awarded to the top males and females in the following age groups: 12 and under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80 and over. - www.unionproject.org - Campaign Update After failing miserably to put together a fancier email update Union Project has returned to our old trusty form of text notification. Hopefully our black and white text and no pictures don’t bore you! (If you want fancy just come by our building:) Regardless, we’re still making great progress on our construction project, but we’re not finished yet. We need your help to get Union Station Café up and running. When the remaining funds are pledged the café construction can be completed within weeks, and the café will open! Construction is already completed on the renovated offices, studios and meeting rooms and these will be open to the public and ready for use in October! We’re writing to ask you to join up in our inaugural membership campaign with a tax-deductible donation to help us wrap up the project. Our goal is to raise $35,000 through this inaugural campaign and individual pledges! Become a member at one of the following levels by visiting www.unionproject.org or emailing Justin(a)unionproject.org. Detail on membership benefits are also available on the website: 1. $100 (or $9 a month for a year OR 100 hours of volunteer labor) sponsors a Union Station mug 2. $250 (or $21 a month) sponsors a Union Station chair 3. $500 ($42 a month) sponsors a Union Station table Create Mosaic Furniture at Union Project! Students enrolled in this class will learn how to create their own glass mosaic furniture. Students will have the choice of working on tabletops that will remain at Union Project for use in Union Station café or students can provide their own furniture to mosaic. All other class materials and tools will be provided. Tools will remain the property of Union Project but will be available for use during class sessions. Cost for this class will be $125 per student. Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm beginning September 17 thru October 22. Pittsburgh mosaic artist Lauren Blair will be the class instructor. Deadline to register is September 10 and several more students are still needed to fill the class! COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE AND HIGHLAND PARK HOUSE TOUR Come by the Union Project on Saturday, October 1 for an open house as part of the Highland Park House Tour. Nego Gato Music and Dance Ensemble will be performing and teaching dance in the Union Project Great Hall. The general public is encouraged to join in the dance instruction. Additional music will be happening throughout the day. Many free kids African art activities and free food from several different countries will be available. Festivities begin at 11 am. After a much needed summer break Union Project will again be offering stained glass restoration classes this fall. Classes will take place in the newly renovated Union Project stained glass studio! 2 exciting class opportunities will begin in mid-October. A Saturday morning class teaching the basics of leaded glass and new window construction will happen. Students will build 4 windows designed by community members as part of a spring design competition. A Thursday evening class will again teach restoration techniques and will be focusing on the restoration of the beautiful Union Project great hall windows. Deadline for registration is October 7. The conference, presented by the Young Preservationists of Pittsburgh, will feature: Keynote addresses from Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Donovan Rypkema (author of "The Economics of Preservation") and Mindy Thompson Fullilove (author of "Root Shock" about the disruptive effects urban renewal on African Americans). The conference will also feature several neighborhood tours, workshops on preservation and more. [Highland Park] car vandalism

As some of you know there has been a problem with car vandalism recently. I didn't know about it until after I made this discovery but it may help you. When I looked at my car today I made a discover that worried me a little. I saw on my passenger door a watermark that looked very strange. Most of the window was free from any water spots but right in the middle was an X made from water. I didn't think it was very likely just a random event and quickly washed it off but then became even more worried when I heard that there had been problems with vandalism and theft recently. [Highland Park] film at Tazza d'Oro 9/13

On Tuesday, September 13 the brand new film ³Fallujah ³ will be shown at 7pm at Tazza d¹Oro on N. Highland Ave. The event is free, and of course everybody is encouraged to attend. Fallujah is the latest film from Brandon Jourdan (Deep Dish TV, NYC Indymedia) and Jacque Soohen (Big Noise Films). It uses never-before seen footage of the violent US assault on the small Iraqi city during November2004. The footage used was shot almost entirely by the Iraqi people and shows a very different perspective of the attack than offered in US media. Fallujah is an ambitious attempt to show the history of a city and its destruction. Brandon Jordan, the producer of this film, recently spent time in Fallujah. The Pittsburgh branch of the Women¹s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the sponsor of the event, feels privileged to obtain one of the first copies of this very recent footage of events in Iraq, especially Fallujah.
