Your warning comes late for me. Harry Emmit had been highly recommended by a couple of people on the list. A month ago I called him to fix a leak in my garage. He pressured me into having the roof fixed that very day without getting other estimates. I kept asking if the water might not be coming in from the ground. He assured me that the roof repair would take care of the problem. The next time it rained there was water in the garage again in the in the same place. He came back once after many phone calls, but not when it was raining. He acknowledged that he needed to be there when it was raining, and said he would fix the problem. But each time I've called during a rain he hasn't answered and he has not returned messages. I've paid $500 for nothing. It seems to me that negative experiences a person might have with a small business owner should best be relayed person to person rather than broadcast across the entire listerv. There have been a rash of postings recently with negative experiences people have had with contractors. As we all know there are two sides to every story. I dont think that tainting someones reputation in a public forum is an appropriate use of this listserv. This is one neighbors opinion. It seems to me that a preferable way to express a negative experience or a warning would be a private email to the person seeking recommendations. Thanks for listening to my thoughts. Between Sherry Goldman and Ethan Winograd, I think some good things can develop. A database of area resources can be established and maintained, with footnotes indicated about bad experiences. Those negative experiences need to be documented well with dates, reported to Better Business Bureau, etc., or else they can ruin a business over a conflict of personality and expectations not made clear. If there is enough support offered, I am willing to help enter data - I'm not experienced in on-line website maintenance. I have been "saving" the summaries of recommendations for a variety of services over the past several years, but NOT the recent negative reports. (Maybe someone else has them). By the way, much of what Sherry proposes is doubled in Angie's List. Although that is not a free service, Angie's List does document positive and negative reports very carefully, and works to resolve the negative reports to everyone's satisfaction.
