For Sunday, February 12, 2006: At the 10 a.m. "hour between the services" our Highland Park neighbor and friend Christine Frechard-Harbison, proprietor of the "EuropArt" gallery on Mellon Street, will be our guest at the "Coffee and" Conversation to discuss her vision and plans for an Institute for Arts and Languages to be located here in Highland Park. Things are moving along, and St. Andrew's is glad to be a partner and supporter in the effort. Come and hear the story! At 12 noon the Coffee Hour following our 11 a.m. service is hosted by our Outreach Committee, with the pre-Valentine's Day theme, "Have a Heart for Hunger." A pleasant selection of seasonal dessert refreshments--and an opportunity to make a donation to the Hunger Programs (Meals on Wheels, Soup Kitchen, and Food Pantry) of the East End Cooperative Ministry. All donations at this event are matched by an anonymous contributor, so we are encouraged to give generously. At 3 p.m. St. Andrew's Senior Choral and Organ Scholar Steve Lipnichan will continue in the 2005-2006 Organ Lecture and Recital series with a presentation, "The German Romantic Organ in America." [Highland Park] lead paint confirmation and removal/covering

Hello! We're in need of qualified/certified people who confirm the presence and then can SAFELY remove lead paint in our home (and, possible, paint over the space afterward...although we like doing that ourselves too). We want to paint our LR, DR, and BR...the paint is cracking from the window frames, so we can't just paint over it in those areas; the BR is covered with wallpaper, but we're pretty sure there are multiple layers of paint underneath. Has anyone had such work done in the past? I'll be contacting the painters listed on the HP contractor list this week, but hoped someone had specific information about lead paint. [Highland Park] Furniture in time for the Super Bowl

Greetings neighbors! I am selling 2 recliners and 1 matching upholstered chair which were purchased for our townhouse, not realizing they would be too big for the family room or living room. (In the showroom, they looked to be the perfect size! It's the same sort of thing that happens with Christmas trees! Out in the field, the tree looks perfect, but once at home, it won't even fit without removing 12 inches!) All 3 chairs are made by "Lazy Boy" and in excellent, essentially new, condition. They are upholstered in a very durable, very textured fabric that is a neutral, tan-taupe color. The "feet" are a dark, cherry color. The dimensions of the recliners are: 38"W, 34"D, 35"H. The chair's dimensions are: 45"W, 37"D, and 35"H. These are very substantial, heavy chairs, and are only being sold because they've been replaced with furniture that is more appropriately sized for my home. Recliners are $200 each and the chair is $150. If interested, call me at 412-361-2643. [Highland Park] good dog needs home

Hello neighbors, Recently our family decided to give a wonderful dog named Mango a trial run (she came from Animal friends). She is about 2-3 years old, great with kids, other animals, housebroken, great on a leash, doesn't run away from you when outside, and just a super loving dog. However, she has severe separation anxiety, and our family, with three young children, doesn't have the consistent schedule to help her overcome it (basically leaving the house in increasingly longer times, consistently, for a few days) Mango really needs someone to spend some time adjusting her to being left alone. The woman who was fostering her before us managed to do it in a weekend, but she was fostering her as an Animal Friends employee, so it wasn't meant to be permanent. It is breaking our hearts to have to give Mango back, but we would love to see her placed in a great HP home. We have grown extremely attached to her in the last few weeks, but we know we have to do what is best for the dog, and for us. So, if you are a dog lover, and want the (almost) perfect dog, please feel free to email us or call us and we can tell you more about her, or call Animal Friends directly. At Animal Friends, Cheryl has been helping, but Barry also knows all about her as well. You really would have a treasure of a dog if you have a little time to invest! [Highland Park] Get involved! Take action to save the Highland Park Farmers Market

The Farmers Market Friends held a meeting January 14th at St. Andrew Episcopal to discuss the situation of the Highland Park Farmers Market. The meeting was well attended and we've got a nice group of people who are willing to get involved - but we still need more support! If you haven't heard, the Highland Park Farmers Market (also known as the "Zoo" market) was slated to move from its current location to a less visible site on reservoir drive. I say, "was slated" because there is a possibility this move may be postponed, but this confusing detail drives the point home even harder - THE HIGHLAND PARK FARMERS MARKET NEEDS FRIENDS! So please come to the next meeting: Satuday, February 11, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Union Project (corner of Stanton and Negley) in its lovely atrium space. AGENDA: 1. Introductions. 2. Sierra Club's 15 minute video, THE TRUE COST OF FOOD. This work illustrates the critical place that farmers markets play in providing a sustainable alternative to mass industrial agriculture. It underscores that communities must create dyanmic, innovative farmers markets. 3. Quick recap of last meeting and updates from those who have been working on targeted activities 4. Exploring the concept and status of a "great marketplace" in the East End. IF YOU'RE NOT SURE YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED, KEEP READING... This market is one of the many wonderful features of life in Highland Park, and really, life in the East End of Pittsburgh. It has had its share of problems, not the least of which can be the traffic snarls when the zoo is closing. This alone has caused a number of people to abandon the market altogether, and that is truly a shame. And maybe, with more community support, the market might get a more ideal, maybe even permanent, location. Think about the best farmers markets you've been to, perhaps those in other states that have their own physical structure and great marketing - wouldn't it be nice to have a healthy, vibrant market in easy reach? Let's think about what farmers markets offers city neighborhoods, and you'll see that this market in particular deserves the support of the community. The Highland Park market has always attracted high quality vendors of fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheese, bread, specialty foods and prepared foods - Sand Hill Berry Farms, Harvest Valley Farms, Cinco de Mayo Salsa, Amish Cookies - just to name a few. When you go the market, you often meet the person who tended or raised or cooked or created the very wares you purchase; you are connected to your food in a way you just can't get at Giant Eagle or Whole Foods. Supporting the farmers market helps keep family farms strong and viable by returning dollars directly to the farmer; they see more of the fruits of their labor than they might if they sell to markets or wholesalers. Farmers markets preserve fertile soil; it keeps farmland from becoming McMansions, Pottery Barns and Walmarts - if we're not careful, we may turn around someday and have nowhere to grow our food. It take a lot of time and a lot of decomposing organic material to make topsoil; we must preserve what we have! Farmers markets help preserve green space, another important consideration when asphalt threatens to take over. Farmers markets offer a rich experience that can't be had at at grocery store; markets with plenty of support even have recreational or education programs to make the experience meaningful and memorable. Farmers markets provide the freshest food at a reasonable price to urban environments, to people who might otherwise never get a truly fresh apple or green pepper or strawberry.
