[Highland Park] Neighbors, Police and Pizza

On the 6400 block of Jackson Street last night (Monday), two neighbors noticed an unfamiliar black man (late teens, early 20s) in front of a vacationing neighbors house. After calling police, they asked him what he was doing. He mumbled that he was waiting for someone. At that moment two other men came from behind the house and squared off with the neighbors saying, "What's up?" Then they walked down the street and were stopped by the police. One of the men had a knife, and police were suspicious that they may have thrown any other weapons away. As we were all sharing information in front of the house, a Pizza Perfecta driver showed up and began walking to the front door. Police stopped him and explained the situation. He had been set up. The shaken driver thanked the crowd of neighbors and gave them the pizza. He said that his wife prays for his safety every time he walks out the door to deliver pizza. Police confirmed that the men had made the phone call and took them in. Thanks to watchful neighbors and quick action by police and robbery, or perhaps worse, was averted. Our gardeners found a SPRINT PALM TRIO cell phone in the hedges today. We called the police at #5 station and gave it to them. If you lost one or it was stolen, please call the station.

[Highland Park] Patrols

We've noticed increased police patrols in our area over the weekend as well as today. Patrol cars have been circling the blocks up and down and around Mellon Street. [Highland Park] CSA (Weekly Box of Farm Veggies) for Sale

We have subscribed to Harvest Valley Farm's Community Supported Agriculture program (http://www.harvestvalleyfarms.com/csa.html) but will be leaving Pgh before the end of the season. This is their third season of CSAs and it's been a wonderful bounty of delicious produce every week. The CSA is a weekly delivery of farm fresh fruits and vegetables delivered on Thursdays to Rippey St. in East Liberty. The cost for the 24 week season is $410 ($17/week) and we will have used 12 weeks (I hope to sell August 23 - November 8). I'd like to sell the half season for $175. I can be somewhat flexible with the dates and they can be flexible with you if you won't be able to pick-up one week either doubling up the following week or having you shop at their farm or at a farmer's market (Sun in Aspinwall or Mon in East Liberty). As a first-step, let's be good neighbors. Part of being a good neighbor is telling your neighbor when they have crossed the line. I have heard dogs barking incessantly for spells longer than a half hour and sometimes for hours. When I have gone to check, I have found dogs just simply barking and not in harm's way. If you hear your neighbor's dogs barking consistently for unreasonable periods of times and at unreasonable times of the day, please (politely) let them know either personally or via an anonymous note. Sometimes the owner of the dogs is simply unaware due to acoustic issues. If that contact gets you no where, then call 911 because there is a city noise ordinance for internal intrusion of sound. [Highland Park] Reservoir of Jazz

[Highland Park] Walks in the Woods - August & September 2007

Let's take a walk in the park! The next "Walk in the Woods" of summer 2007 is this week--Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 6:30 pm. Meet at the restored fountain and gardens on Reservoir Drive near the intersection of North Highland Avenue and Bunkerhill Street. Please arrive promptly at 6:30 pm so we can begin the walk as scheduled. There is no need to RSVP. The current weather forecast looks nice--but hot. It would be a good idea to bring drinking water. When planning what to wear keep in mind that paths in the park can many times be uneven. If you plan to bring a baby, I suggest using something like a Baby Bjorn instead of a stroller. The exact route we take depends on who shows up. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy sponsors these walks in the four major Pittsburgh Parks. Each walk is led by volunteer docents who can tell you about what's going on in the park, park history, and can talk about the many different types of plants you'll see in the parks. The last walk in Highland Park for the summer is scheduled for September 16 at 4:00 pm. This walk will focus on park and area history. The schedule for the other parks is as follows: Frick: August 8 & September 9; Riverview: August 18 & September 23; and Schenley: August 22 & September 2. (The 2nd date in each case is also a special history walk.) If leading walks like this interests you, please let me know because docent opportunities are available.
