Hi Neighbors, I don't know if any of you signed up for the Citizen Observer Alerts as Cdr Brackney suggested, but there is not one piece of information from Zone 5 listed. I'm living in Japan but have close ties to the neighborhood and am interested in keeping abreast of the criminal activity taking place. Cdr Brackney, is there any way that Zone 5 can enter their data? It's of no use if we can't find out about our area. [Highland Park] Reminder - House Tour on Saturday

We just wanted to remind our wonderful neighbors that the Highland Park House Tour is this coming Saturday from 11am to 5pm. The neighborhood looks great, but if you see any trash lying around or anything else unsightly, please pick it up so we can make a great impression on all of our visitors! Also, if you have off-street parking, please don't use precious on-street parking places on Saturday. We always have some enthusiastic visitors that are unable to walk the entire tour, so we'd love to have as much on-street parking available as possible. Pre-sale tickets will be on sale at Enrico's Tazza D'oro until they close on Friday night for $15. On Saturday, tickets will be available at St. Andrew's Epsicopal Church for $20 beginning at 11am. And lastly, when I spoke to Brigette earlier this week, we were still short by ten volunteers. If you can help out on Saturday (from 10:45am-2pm or 1:45pm-5pm), please call Brigette Nadler at 412-363-6869 asap. All volunteers get a free ticket to go on the tour during the hours that they aren't working and they will be invited to the thank you party in October. Thanks! [Highland Park] Another Burglary Yesterday - Heberton

We were burglarized in the 1300 block of Heberton St. yesterday as well - very similar to Kelly's situation on Callowhill - they jimmied open the kitchen window and crawled through. They also took a file of important documents, including a soc card, which is, of course, an identity theft concern. The police were unsuccessful in lifting any prints, so although we think they may have been kids (by what they took as well as what they didn't!), they knew enough to cover themselves. We have a dog who usually barks loudly at anyone even walking by the house - although she wouldn't hurt a fly, we thought she'd be a deterrent - the thiefs either were familiar with her, or are pretty fearless (as evidenced by the daylight break-ins!). More reason to continue looking out for our neighbors. Laura Zaspel Lawson

[Highland Park] Attempted house break in this morning

Between 9:am and 9:20am this morning (9/24/07) a man tried to break into my house. I live in the 6400 part of Jackson Street and love my street, neighbors and home. At 9:am, ( I know because my son was late for school) I pulled out of my driveway to scoot my son down to Dilworth where he is a student. On are way (on Jackson St. near Heberton) I saw a man that gave me a funny feeling. I did not like the way he was looking over his shoulder at two women who had just passed with a stroller going in the opposite direction. He just looked out of place and shifty. To myself I thought ... keep an eye open for him on my way home. At about 9:15-9:20 I pulled back into my drive way. I saw something out of place in my open garage and walked to the back of my house to find my ladder (stupidly kept in my garage) leaning against my house under an open second floor bedroom window. I ran down my drive way and called to two men working on the outside of a neighbors house to please call 911. I did not know at that point if anyone was inside my house. As I reached the two workmen with the phone I turned to see the same shifty gave me a funny feeling guy from 9:am suddenly on the sidewalk between my house and my neighbors. We verbally confronted him while on the phone with 911 and he kept walking until he reached a white chevy SUV. He got in his car and backed up fast so we could not get his plate number, and then pulled a quick U-turn and drove off down Jackson St. toward Heberton. We were to far to see which way (if any) he turned. I must say police response time was pretty good and by the time police arrived a man in a wht. van had been stopped. (but wrong kind of car and wrong guy - poor fellow!) BUT !!! THEY CAUGHT HIM !!! It is now 1:10 pm and I have just come home from I.D. ing the man we confronted on Jackson Street. Seems he was caught trying to break into a house in Garfield. He had not even bothered to change his clothes. Also, turns out he had a gun in his car. This is a lot for me to process emotionally in a such a short span of time. But I now promise to secure my home, have a cell phone in my pocket when I leave, learn how to use its camera, and always trust my gut. I care very much about this community.
