Hello Neighbors! My son has a project to do that is required for him to earn the Eagle rank in Boy Scouts. He is building a small deck for the Shepherd's Heart Fellowship in Uptown. The deck is actually to be built behind their staff and veteran housing off of Millvale in Oakland. This is a big request, but if any of you have a post hole digger that he can use the weekend of October 10, it would be much appreciated. (And taken care of) Also, does anyone know where to rent a cement mixer and a gas-powered generator at very reasonable rates? Thank you from all of us: me, my son, and Shepherd's Heart! [Highland Park] Odd solicitation?

A man came to my door Thursday evening, waved a can of Air Wick air freshener at me and said something about "working in the neighborhood" and did I use this kind of stuff? My impression was that he was trying to sell me something but he had no sample bag or papers. When I told him no, and that I was busy, he seemed to want to linger. Luckily, my rather large dogs were both agitated so I told him I had to go. He was white, bald(ing), 30's-40's wearing khakis and perhaps a dress shirt. Anyone have a similar experience? [Highland Park] Great rummage sale: attn. theater groups

3rd Presb.Church on the corner of Negley and Fifth Ave. is having a large rummage sale tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 am - 2 pm. Lots of kitchen stuff (name your own price), tons of linens: sheets, blankets, comforters, aprons, curtains and drapes, place mats, napkins. Clothing: mens, womans, childrens, electronics, small furniture. Attention theater companies: Among the mens clothing are numerous loud, plaid, wool pants; some almost patchwork in wool, all beautifully dry cleaned and pressed. These would be great costumes for something period like "Guys and Dolls." Also numerous sport jackets in lovely spring colors. Bargains galore! Something for everyone!

I have a solid green, full-sized, fabric (not leather) couch that could be yours, absolutely free! It would be a great couch for a kid's playroom or basement (in other words, it's not pretty to look at, but it's completely functional and comfy). [Highland Park] vandalism on Wayne Road & Jackson St.

We went out for a walk around 8 p.m. this evening (Thursday). When we turned down Wayne Road, we saw a couple of very large urns that had held flowers that had been overturned and one was broken. We alerted a nearby homeowner. As we continued down Wayne Road, we saw another very large wooden flower box that had been torn off a lawn and thrown on the street. When we got back home on Jackson St., a neighbor asked us if we had had any urns or flower boxes broken. They had just been out for a hour or two and came back to find their flower boxes and urns knocked over and broken. We called 911 to let the police know about the vandalism. jai

Again, I hope this is okay to post. We are asking for donations of bottled water, microwave popcorn, and snack foods -- like pretzels, granola bars, trail mix. Bags of apples would be good, too, as they last a long time. Just drop them off at the Obama Campaign headquarters at 125-127 Highland Avenue.
