Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy News Contact: Laura Cook 412-682-7275, ext 220 lcook(a)pittsburghparks.org Pizzazz to donate majority of proceeds to new Environmental Center (PITTSBURGH - October 10, 2008) - The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is pleased to announce that a majority of the net proceeds from Pizzazz, the annual fundraiser of the Garden Club of Allegheny County, a member of the Garden Club of America, will be awarded to support development of a master landscape plan for the new Environmental Center at Frick Park. Since the previous environmental center burnt down in 2002, the Parks Conservancy has been working with the community and the City of Pittsburgh to envision and plan for a new facility. In the meantime, environmental education continues to be offered in Frick Park by staff of the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Parks and Recreation. The wide-reaching community planning effort identified the theme "Education through Restoration," developed a concept for the building, and decided that it would be built in approximately the same location along at the historic Clayton Hill entrance off Beechwood Boulevard. The new Environmental Center at Frick Park will reconnect children and their families to nature, fostering the next generation of park stewards who value green space. Pizzazz is held at the Fox Chapel Golf Club on Thursday, October 16 and Friday, October 17, and admission is $5. The event will be open on Thursday from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM and on Friday from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. A buffet luncheon prepared by the Club's renowned kitchen is available for shoppers both days at an additional charge of $25. Pizzazz will feature 30 unique designer boutiques from around the country, offering products that are not otherwise available locally. Schenley Memorial Fountain Dedication Scheduled for October 16 (OAKLAND - October 10, 2008) - The half million dollar restoration effort is complete on the Mary E. Schenley Memorial Fountain located in Schenley Plaza, and an opening and dedication ceremony is scheduled for October 16. Created to acknowledge Mary Schenley's gift and later sale of land to create Schenley Park, the fountain sculpture, by Victor Brenner, is entitled A Song to Nature. The figures above the fountain are an allegorical depiction of culture taming nature. The entire memorial has been cleaned, and the granite basin repointed and caulked. Plumbing work has restored the flow of water through the turtles' mouths into the fountain basin, and decorative bronze elements have been removed for cleaning and to provide molds for recasting missing ones. The surrounding paving has been rebuilt, new benches acquired, and for the first time, lights will illuminate the fountain at night. Sidewalks are being narrowed (less pavement will improve absorption of storm water) and realigned for more direct pedestrian access to crosswalks. A generous gift from The Benter Foundation has funded lighting of the fountain which will commence on October 16. To celebrate the light-up and restoration, a dedication will be held at 6:30 PM surrounding the fountain. The fountain lighting coincides with the Pittsburgh 250 Oakland Festival of Lights that will light many Oakland destinations, including the Cathedral of Learning. In addition to The Benter Foundation, funds for the restoration project have been donated by: the City of Pittsburgh through its Allegheny Regional Asset District funds; The Howard E. and Nell E. Miller Foundation; National Endowment for the Arts; The H. Glenn Sample Jr. MD Memorial Fund through the PNC Charitable Trust Grant Review Committee; and the Juliet Lea Hillman Simonds Foundation. Significant in-kind donations have also been made by the City of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh. Perhaps best known as the designer of the Lincoln Penny, Victor David Brenner's art was distinct and fresh because he combined his artistic talents with a tradesman's knowledge of cutting and working the design in the metal itself. A Song to Nature is a significant Brenner piece because it was his first large-scale public project. Harold van Buren Magonigle was the fountain's architect. It was originally dedicated on September 2, 1918. "The fountain is an important part of the entrance of Schenley Park, as well as the history of Pittsburgh. We are so pleased that this project's completion coincided with Pittsburgh's 250th celebration. Schenley Memorial Fountain was awarded to sculptor Victor David Brenner after a much-publicized design competition that began in 1913. Brenner, a successful medallionist, designed the Lincoln Penny, which at one hundred billion impressions is perhaps the most reproduced work of art in the history of the world. * Mary E. Schenley Memorial Fountain was dedicated on Labor Day, 1918. Evening festivities drew a crowd of 4,000. Earlier that day, the Pirates completed a double-header with the Chicago Cubs at Forbes Field just a few hundred feet away. * A Song to Nature faces Schenley Plaza, the grand entrance to Schenley Park. Managed by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the Plaza includes the grounds in front of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Frick Fine Arts Building, where the Mary Schenley Fountain is located. The Plaza recently underwent a restoration that transformed the space from a parking lot into a public green space, its original use more than 100 years ago. Among the many amenities offered at the Plaza are free internet wireless service, a one-acre lawn and large tent, the PNC Carousel, four food and drink kiosks, moveable tables and chairs, restrooms, and ongoing entertainment. * Victor Brenner, born in 1871, and Michael Brenner (father of Joseph Brenner), born in 1885, were Jews from Lithuania (then a part of Russia). Victor, who learned die cutting and tombstone carving from his father, fled conscription into the Russian army and landed in New York in 1890. Saving money he earned in the Lower East Side jewelry trade, Victor sponsored his entire family's emigration to New York in 1895, including Michael, who soon manifested artistic ability himself and studied at the Art Student's League; Miriam, a pianist and instructor; Samuel, who became a successful Bronx-based architect; and Morris, a silversmith. Samuel's son Daniel, also an architect, later collaborated with Mies Van der Rohe in Chicago. * In 1898, Victor went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and with France's noted medallionist, Louis-Oscar Roty. You were very generous with offers for potential housing back in February when we sent out a similar request. We are sending this out on behalf of a 4th year medical student who will be spending a month at UPMC Presby. Her original housing arrangement fell through last minute. [Highland Park] Operation Christmas Child

Hello Neighbors and Friends, I recently joined a Mom's group - MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers). As part of the year's activities, we each prepare a shoe box of gifts for Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. I was very excited to learn about the project b/c a) I always mean to do something charitable, but b) I never feel like I have massive amounts of time or energy to commit. I realized that many of you may be in a similar boat, so I wanted to offer up the project to you. If you'd like to fill a shoebox with gifts and drop it off at our house, I would be happy to bring the boxes to our meeting and make sure that the details are handled and that the boxes go out together. I haven't checked the website, but if you'd like to read a little more about it, I'm sure there is information on there about the project: www.samaritanspurse.org. Our address is 6012 Bryant Street. The boxes need to go out by mid-November, so if we set a goal of them being to our house by November 1, I think that would allow enough time to handle all of the details (forms, wrapping, etc.). We have a very handsome, hand-crafted dining room table for sale. From the Drexel Heritage "Covington Park" collection, it is a beautiful double-pedestal eighteenth-century style formal dining room table with claw feet measuring approximately 6.5' x 4'. The table top, legs & main body are all true Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). Supportive minor woodwork is hard Maple. Table surface veneer is a gorgeous Mahogany burl. Three pictures are attached. This table is in very good condition (some minor scratches) and comes with neither chairs nor leaves. Because of the solid Mahogany construction this table is heavy. [Highland Park] more vandalism on N. Euclid

I'm writing on behalf of my neighbors here on N. Euclid, near Wellesley. Their yard was vandalized Friday in the early evening--LOTS of broken flower pots and stolen Halloween decorations. This is the third time in recent weeks that this family has had items from their porch/yard stolen or smashed. My neighbors reported this latest incident to the police and urge others to do the same. The officer told said they absolutely don't mind coming out for these calls. Or, if you like, you can always call the police and tell them you just want the incident on-record; an officer doesn't necessarily have to come out. To echo an earlier post: Folks, it's really important to report this stuff - even minor stuff. We can't expect them to increase police presence if they don't know how bad the problem is. [Highland Park] Help Defeat Blood Cancers

Hi Highland Park Neighbor, Maybe you’ve seen me running around the neighborhood on creaky knees. Without running for a worthwhile cause I could never have ditched a donut-based diet in order to train for a marathon, and raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) leukemia research and treatment. I’m writing to ask for your help in treating and curing blood cancers. With the help of many, including four Highland Park neighbors, I’ve raised $1400 with $2600 to go at http://pages.teamintraining.org/wpa/rnrsa08/mstaresinic. Donors have left messages like, “Double cancer survivor – five years!” “We're so thankful that our mother and our friend are FIVE YEARS FREE of lymphoma!” The LLS has helped more kids than ever survive leukemia. The LLS has suggested donation levels -- $55 for a week of low-grade chemo, $115 for blood transfusion. Of course, anything is welcome! [Highland Park] Car Broken into, again !!!

Hi there - I practicing what I preach, I again am reporting the ransacking of our vehicle. It had to be younger people, as they got just three items. Two cell phone car chargers (these days this is absolutely worthless unless you know exactly the make and model for each charger), as well as an old pocket PC (the information on this is the biggest lose). We had been contacting our customers for a trip while on the road, and had forgotten it was still there. They got lucky just to have found it, but the batteries are giving out so I hope it just died on whom ever took it. This happened during Saturday night, and right on our parking patio next to our home. This had to be locals whom were walking around looking for entry to homes, cars etc, and we did file a police report. It is probably the same people that hit us in July, so they have a target and are coming back. Our vehicle had been locked, but all doors were unlocked when we found it Saturday morning. Sorry not to have gotten this out sooner, but our e-mail server was down for upgrades since Friday night, thus the lateness of this going out. Please lock your vehicles and homes, and do not just walk away for a few seconds.
