[Highland Park] Over the weekend...

(Apologies if this gets posted multiple times, my connection timed out) We called the police on Saturday morning because I found an empty backpack on our front lawn with a bunch of receipts, canceled checks, and other items strewn on the street (N Highland). Having lived for years in several other cities with random crime, it had the familiar look of a personal effect that had been stolen, rummaged through, and tossed. We called the non emergency police number and they said to call 911, which we did. But when the officer arrived she was somewhat upset that we had called 911 and made a bunch of comments complaining about the lack of a real crime scene, and basically lecturing me on when to call 911 (even though we were instructed to do so, which I didn't realize when I was talking to her because my wife had made the call while I was outside). She seemed unimpressed with the possibility that this could be a crime, but she took the bag with her. This officer's supervisor called me later to follow up on our call, and he confirmed that indeed we had done the right thing despite what the responding officer said, and that at any rate ordinary citizens are not expected to be sophisticated criminal investigators. He was appreciative that we were concerned citizens and said that as a neighborhood we should err on the side of reporting things that don't seem right. He said he would give this feedback to the officer as well. I thought that if someone had complained of a stolen bag, then they could have the physical evidence and location where it was dumped to try to piece together what had happened. Clearly I am not a professional crime fighter but we felt compelled to take a more questioning look at something unusual on our doorstep. _________________________________________________________________ Want to read Hotmail messages in Outlook? [Highland Park] Incident Sunday early morning

In light of the recent break-ins that we've been experiencing in HP, I wanted to alert the neighborhood to something I saw Sunday morning... I was driving down Farragut St. early in the morning to pick up my son from his friend's house in the 800 block of Farragut St. As I approached the corner of Farragut (900 block) and Jackson, I saw a man just lingering on the corner. It was 1:45 am and pouring down rain. Something just didn't feel right to me, so after picking up my son, I decided to circle the block and go back up Farragut to see if he was still there. He was, but this time he was joined by two younger men, possibly older teens. My gut instinct told me that something was up. When I got home, I called 911 and reported what I had seen. I apologized to the dispatcher for possibly reporting something that might seem trivial, but he disagreed with me and said I did the right thing and that at 1:30 in the morning in the pouring rain, these guys were probably up to no good. I don't know if the police were sent to checked it out. Once again, illustrates the need for all of us to keep our eyes open as we drive our neighborhood streets and to listen to our instincts — no matter the time of day. If something looks suspicious or just doesn't feel right, report it and let the police determine its validity. Marcie McGuire

On page 138 of the current (November) issue of Pittsburgh Magazine there is a favorable review of this book, written by the East End/East Liberty Historical Society and published earlier this year. [Highland Park] car part follow up

The car part found on Callery belongs to my husband. It took us awhile to notice it was missing, and when we learned neighbors had found it we knew it was ours. That prompted us to look for the small case of quarters we keep in the car, and we realized it was also missing. Nothing else appeared to be touched - nothing rummaged through or strewn about -- portable CD player, papers, etc. all fully intact. That's why it took nearly a week for us to notice anything. Please note: my husband is always diligent to lock his car. We suspect the car vandals know how to pick locks. We don't mean to cause undue alarm, but please use this as another reminder to not leave any valuables or even coins in your car.
