Hi folks, Would you like to be able to order good quality meats and prepared foods online and have them delivered to your doorstep? Pittsburgh Fulton Elementary (5799 Hampton Street) does a monthly fundraiser with Market Day (www.marketday.com) Access the catalog online, place and pay for your order by Monday, November 24th and the Fulton PTO will deliver your products to your front porch on Tuesday December 2nd after 4 pm (Highland Park neighborhood only). I wouldn't even really be emailing the listserv if we weren't having a rash of petty crimes in the neighborhood. Maybe those extra-long dog walks might be a good thing tonight.... [Highland Park] Car Break-ins

so as it seems that there have been a lot of break ins recently (and i was a victim last august) i thought it might be wise to add my two cents in on this. for several years i was a parking lot attendant. i know FROM EXPERIENCE that it is NOT HARD to stick a coat hanger or some other 'slim jim' device down the window and pop a lock open. that is how my car was broken into last year right on negley ave and avondale pl, right out in the open at night. the tale tell sign of this were the streak marks on the front passenger door window, as well as the rubber gasket/trim on the window being a little bit torn on the edge. also, i am a bit obsessive about locking my car doors, so i know for a fact that they were locked. advice: 1. if you car is broken into, do NOT assume that you forgot to lock it. 2. Call the police and file a report 3. do not keep valuables in your car and if you have a radio with a detachable faceplate--detach it and take it into the house with you.. the thief will find it if you stow it in your car. 4. keep all bags out of sight (the trunk is a good place) this includes book bags with your notes for the semester and your $100 text book. the book is replaceable fairly easily... the notes will take you a long time to recoup. 5. possibly invest in a car alarm. now-a-days you can get a car alarm and remote start installed relatively inexpensively... and the remote start is great for these COLD mornings that are bound to get colder this winter. --spr

A suggested Secure Car Property Checklist: -lock the doors to the car. -keep valuables with you, not in the car. For example, if you have important documents, why not place them in a small bag that you bring in and out of the car with you? Call it "the car bag" - throw an ipod, a changepurse, a folder that contains registration and insurance information, etc. When you go to the car, bring that bag with you, and take it with you when you park your car on the street. Therefore, you train yourself and your family to think of all valuables collectively as one thing - which goes in and out of the car. A thief cannot remove items that aren't IN the car. -report break-ins to 911. If the call responder and/or the responding officer is not appreciative, that's a separate issue altogether. The bottom line is that the Bureau of Police needs that data in order to be responsive. -at every turn, ask yourself, "have I done *everything* I can do to secure my property?" Ultimately, we all bear that responsibility primarily.
