Dear Neighbors - I am sending out this reminder regarding our Monthly Meeting for the HPCC on this coming Thursday, 17 SEP 09. I am also seeing if there is anyone who has an interest in being involved with the HPCC, as we are having our elections at this meeting. If you wish to be involved, then please let me know, as well as plan to attend. We shall be starting our Board Meeting at 7:00 PM, followed by David Hance's Presentation on Heth's Run. Development priorities, neighborhood standards, quality of life decisions, environmental values, job creation and transportation planning will all be in play throughout the Strip, Lawrenceville, Morningside and Highland Park communities. One project that got a jump start on many of these same challenges is in our own backyard, the mile long valley that runs from Hampton Street to the River, Heth's Run. On Wednesday evening, September 9, the project will be introduced to the Advisory Committee of the Allegheny Vision Master Plan at the Zoo's Education Building. Residents of Highland Park and Morningside are also quite welcome to attend. A presentation will take place at 6PM, followed by a trip down the Zoo escalator to Heth's Run and a walk out to Ice Cream Station Zebra for ice cream and a view of the Allegheny River. Below are excerpts from an article I wrote for the December, 2003 Highland Park Newsletter that outlined the issues as seen from that date. While there have been changes and milestones passed over the past six years in the schedule and details of the work, the "big idea" of the Heth's Run opportunity has remained much the same as presented below. Dave Hance, President Highland Park Community Development Corporation "Most of us know Heth's Run as the location of the Zoo's parking lot, and for what used to be there, the City's Dept. of Public Works storage yard. Once a year, we'd haul our old Christmas tree "down there", or, perhaps, we'd walk down the path below the King Estate, past the remains of the burned-out cars, to view out at the asphalt plain that caps the Run's upper reaches. Once a dramatic feature of the East End landscape, Heth's Run is now a wasteland. That may be about to change. After decades of neglect, Heth's Run is suddenly the focus of significant new interest: * PennDOT is moving toward the replacement of the once-beautiful, but now buried and deteriorated bridge at Allegheny River Boulevard; * The City has abandoned its dumping grounds at the upper portion of the Run; * Green soccer fields will soon replace some of the gray asphalt; * The Pittsburgh Zoo is planning to upgrade its "front door" parking lot and entry drive; * A riverfront trail is planned along the south bank of the Allegheny River; and * The new Highland Park Master Plan has highlighted the potential of the Run to make fundamentally exciting new connections between neighborhoods, the Park, the Zoo, and the River. If coordinated properly, all of these efforts can be combined to create a whole that is far greater than the sum of their parts. Heth's Run can be reinvented in the process, and our City and our neighborhood stand to gain greatly. Years of neglect and environmental abuse can be undone in the process. The Highland Park Community Council and CDC, along with the Morningside Area Community Council, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, as well as Senator Ferlo, are leading the charge for a comprehensive design process to seize this one time opportunity to create a new Heth's Run. We are pleased to be working closely with the Mayor and City Planning, the Riverlife Task Force, and the Zoo to create the "new Heth's Run." Greetings Neighbors, Tomorrow night Tuesday September 15, 2009. I will be singing at a new venus located in South Side Works, "Dolce" from 7-9pm. Daniel May will be accompanying me on piano, if you have not heard him he is fantastic! Being that this is a new venus and Dolce is trying to providing live music, we need to get folks in the door. Typically on the weekend Dolce is known as an up-scale night club, but the owner is committed to trying something different, providing a home for the Pittsburgh Diva's on Tuesday nights. This is the 4th week that he has opened his doors, and tomorrow is my night! The food is really good and fairly priced and the ambiance is classy. FYI, there is construction in front of Dolce, which is located one block in from the hot metal bridge on Carson Street. If you are lucky to find parking along the street, great. If not the garage is $3.00 and is just a short walk to the club. I hope to seem you out tomorrow and pass on the info to those who might be interested. Tania Grubbs

Hi neighbors, We have a large-room window a/c unit (I think 1,000 btu) which is free-for-the-haul. It's Hampton Bay and is still in good condition. However, it is VERY heavy. So, if you'd like to take it, make sure you bring someone to help you load it in to your car. The a/c is sitting on our covered porch at 1355 Heberton St. -Kate

hi neighborhors, my husband put a framed babytrend backpack baby carrier out with the trash yesterday and this morning noticed that it was gone before the rest of the trash, meaning someone picked it up. normally that's obviously fine, but this backpack was out with the trash because it had been RECALLED by the manufacturer because of defective seams. if the person who took it sees this, please DO NOT use this carrier with your baby, the seams could potentially unravel and create a dangerous situation. the recall information is here http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml07/07138.html my mom had bought the carrier from a friend at a yard sale before the recall, but since it didn't fit any of us properly, we never bothered to exchange it during the recall and just used other carriers instead (i teach babywearing, so we had plenty to choose from). the carrier was taken from the trash in front of our house on hampton street, across the street from fulton elementary school. genevieve hower
