Dear Neighbors, I live on Wellesley Ave, near Negley. Wanted to make everyone aware that someone broke into my friend's car last night. They had their car parked in the alley behind Wellesely Ave. They stole items that were in the glove box. Please be on the lookout for people breaking into cars at night, and make sure to take all your valuables out of your car, even the glove box, so this doesn't happen to you. Best Regards, Fred

HP neighbors, This morning (Friday) I exited my garage at approx. 10:30 for work, only to realize that I had left something behind in my house. I pulled around to Hampton st. and ran back in to retrieve it-wasn't gone more than 30-45 seconds- to come back to my vehicle to find my LARGE tote bag STOLEN from my car!!! As those of you have experienced this (read ALL the posts) ,I feel totally violated and angry! not to mention that my entire life and business "stuff" is in this bag! Well ,just in case someone should come across it, the bag is pewter (grey) colored 2handle rectangle shaped,a black shiny zip-around wallet inside along with a zillion other things! My little one has graduated to a front facing car seat so I no longer need his infant seat. It is a Britax Companion infant seat. It is rear facing only for 4-22lbs. It has gotten a lot of use in the last year but is still in really good shape. Made in USA and have the manual and original box. Includes the car base as well. I paid $165 at babyland 1 year ago. When I left for work at 5:45 this morning there was a strange car parked across the street.? The man inside was looking at a map - strange because we are not a through street.? I left and doubled back to see the man getting out of his car, in front of my house.? When he saw my car, he got back into the car and drove away.? A few minutes later, I drove around Cordova and he was parked between a couple of cars there. I called the police and asked them to check, and to check the neighborhood during the day and night.? [Highland Park] feral cats

My husband and I attended a program at Animal Friends last night. We also had an opportunity to tour Animal Friends mobile spay and neuter hospital. They have been asked by various communities to trap, spay/neuter feral cat populations and release. They've had the mobile unit less than a year and have done approximately 3,000 spay/neuters of feral cats as well as low cost spay/neuters. Many of you are aware that Animal Friends is a state of the art no kill shelter in Pittsburgh. It is the ONLY no kill shelter. They believe that adoption is not the sole answer to the problem of homeless cats or dogs. In the case of cats, one female cat is capable of having 55 kittens in its lifetime. I know that there are feral cats at the reservoir and wondered if any organization has been involved in a spay and neuter program. Please email me if you have information. Dear Neighbors - Again, I am sending out this reminder regarding our Monthly Meeting for the HPCC on this coming Thursday, 17 SEP 09. I am also seeing if there is anyone who has an interest in being involved with the HPCC, as we are having our elections at this meeting. Development priorities, neighborhood standards, quality of life decisions, environmental values, job creation and transportation planning will all be in play throughout the Strip, Lawrenceville, Morningside and Highland Park communities. One project that got a jump start on many of these same challenges is in our own backyard, the mile long valley that runs from Hampton Street to the River, Heth's Run. On Wednesday evening, September 9, the project will be introduced to the Advisory Committee of the Allegheny Vision Master Plan at the Zoo's Education Building. Residents of Highland Park and Morningside are also quite welcome to attend. A presentation will take place at 6PM, followed by a trip down the Zoo escalator to Heth's Run and a walk out to Ice Cream Station Zebra for ice cream and a view of the Allegheny River. Below are excerpts from an article I wrote for the December, 2003 Highland Park Newsletter that outlined the issues as seen from that date. While there have been changes and milestones passed over the past six years in the schedule and details of the work, the "big idea" of the Heth's Run opportunity has remained much the same as presented below. Dave Hance, President Highland Park Community Development Corporation "Most of us know Heth's Run as the location of the Zoo's parking lot, and for what used to be there, the City's Dept. of Public Works storage yard. Once a year, we'd haul our old Christmas tree "down there", or, perhaps, we'd walk down the path below the King Estate, past the remains of the burned-out cars, to view out at the asphalt plain that caps the Run's upper reaches. Once a dramatic feature of the East End landscape, Heth's Run is now a wasteland. That may be about to change. After decades of neglect, Heth's Run is suddenly the focus of significant new interest: * PennDOT is moving toward the replacement of the once-beautiful, but now buried and deteriorated bridge at Allegheny River Boulevard; * The City has abandoned its dumping grounds at the upper portion of the Run; * Green soccer fields will soon replace some of the gray asphalt; * The Pittsburgh Zoo is planning to upgrade its "front door" parking lot and entry drive; * A riverfront trail is planned along the south bank of the Allegheny River; and * The new Highland Park Master Plan has highlighted the potential of the Run to make fundamentally exciting new connections between neighborhoods, the Park, the Zoo, and the River. If coordinated properly, all of these efforts can be combined to create a whole that is far greater than the sum of their parts. Heth's Run can be reinvented in the process, and our City and our neighborhood stand to gain greatly. Years of neglect and environmental abuse can be undone in the process. The Highland Park Community Council and CDC, along with the Morningside Area Community Council, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, as well as Senator Ferlo, are leading the charge for a comprehensive design process to seize this one time opportunity to create a new Heth's Run. We are pleased to be working closely with the Mayor and City Planning, the Riverlife Task Force, and the Zoo to create the "new Heth's Run."
