Hello Friends and Neighbors, It has come to my attention that some folks don't know that the Steel City Hoop Union still meets every Tuesday evening at the Union Project. Just bring yourself (and your mom, your dad, your grandma, your uncle, your girlfriend, your boyfriend . . . . ) and we'll bring hula hoops, music, and instruction if you'd like some. It's so much fun you'll forget it's exercise. If it's hot, bring some water. We hoop outside in nice weather, indoors if it rains. Dear Neighbors, When looking for a reliable tree service, I highly reccomend finding one using this site: http://www.isa-arbor.com/findArborist/findarborist.aspx It is extremely important for the health of your tree that you have it properly taken care of and pruned by a person who understands tree biology, growth, structure, and function, and who also has a deeper understanding of pests and diseases, some of which are taking a toll on our urban forests in the Eastern United States. (Perhaps you have heard of Oak Wilt, the Emerald Ash Borer, or the Asian Longhorned Beetle?) Arborists know to clean their pruning tools after working on each tree so that a fungus that may have been present in the last tree they worked on doesn't come to your neighborhood and damage your trees. I am more than glad to give the names of great, reliable, certified arborist tree companies my organization regularly works with, and I usually do each time someone posts a question about tree services. Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest cannot do private property work, but we do hire contractors from time to time who do. For the health of your trees and of the trees throughout the city, I emplore you to hire a certified professional. hey all, we have a security door that we will be taking to construction junction if no one wants it. it is outside our house...1136 Winterton. It is black iron (some sort of metal). all the parts are there. it does need to be sanded in some parts and repainted but otherwise it is totally functional and solid. -- Cara

[Highland Park] Carnegie Lake

I walk my dog down to Carnegie Lake most every day. For those of you who do not know, this is the lake right next to the Highland Park swimming pool. Early in the spring, I noticed that there was an early appearance of algae bloom, and a heavy occurrence of string algae. In the last few weeks, I have noticed more garbage, such as dirty diapers, bags, bottles, etc. floating in the lake and being caught by the algae. What should be a beautiful park experience is now looking like the beginnings of a cesspool. Also, there is a notable lack of garbage cans, that if people were so inclined to use them, there are not there to use! I have been told to call 311 about this issue. If you share this experience, I encourage you to do likewise.
