[Highland Park] Plumber info

Hi! Our sewer backed up in the rain last night--we carried over 115 gallons upstairs and out the door when it was still rising. We tried calling the plumbers on the HP-recommended list, but the vast majority were unwilling to do after-dark calls. So I went to the phone book and called a 24-hour plumber, Mr. Rooter. This was at 10pm. We were given a time window of 12 midnight to 2 am. When they hadn't shown up by 2 am, we called them again. The fellow answering the phones was quite surly, and said we needed to call back again in an hour to find out the status. At 3 am, I called again, and got their answering machine. They did not call us to check in and give their status until 8 am this morning, by which time we had already arranged for another plumber to come (through our homeowners insurance--the insurance company could not get any of their preferred providers to make midnight calls, and were willing to pay anybody we could get to come out; when we couldn't get anybody, they made the arrangements for a daytime appointment). The frustrating and discourteous treatment we got from Mr. Rooter makes it worth passing on this non-recommendation for their non-timely non-services and total utter lack of forthrightness. --Emily King Ave

[Highland Park] For Sale: worm compost tea

I will be making worm compost tea over the next few days, but I'll have more than I need. I'd love to sell off the extra to my neighbors. Worm castings are one of the best fertilizers out there--lots of helpful microbial life, nutrients, and even some natural pathogen- fighting qualities. Worm compost tea can be applied directly to any part of the plant without harming it. My worms have been fed only organic food scraps, so no worries about pesticides or herbicides. I'm offering the tea at $5 for 16 oz. and $20 for a half gallon. I have a few empty containers here, but if you have a bottle you want to use, feel free to bring it. It's best to use it within a day of completion (when I'll shut off the aerator) so that the healthy microbes are still thriving--hard to get the same deal from a store- brand variety. The tea should be ready by Friday. I'm on Sheridan, between Stanton and Jackson. If you are interested, email me, and I'll give you the exact location for pick-up. I will be making a relatively small quantity, so let me know soon if you want some. Thanks! Christie

[Highland Park] Chinese rugs, Dining room and kitchen table for sale

Hello Neighbors, I have more items for sale: I have 2 beautiful large Chinese rugs for sale - they are old from the art Deco period. Both are in fairly good shape and the colors are lovely. One is peach with a brown border. It has aqua birds, Chinese lanterns and cherry blossoms on it. It measures 9' 9" x 12"x4". $400 The other is a deep shade of rose with a great palm tree on it. It is colorful and most unusual. It measures 9" x 11' 7". $400 The Dining room furniture was my my Grandmothers. The mahogany chairs are shield backs in the wheat pattern and there are 8 of them - one is at the upholsterers. The table easily accommodates 8 chairs. It is a Duncan Phyfe style table. I had a leaf made for it, and it has 2 drop leaves on either end. I would like $60 for each chair and $300 for the table, or a total of $780. The kitchen table is a 45" round oak table with no leaves. I have 5 pressed back oak chairs. 2 match and 3 match. I would like $50 per chair and $200 for the table, a total of $450.
