[Highland Park] City appealing our property assessment

Today my husband I received notice that the City of Pittsburgh is appealing our property tax assessment. We believe this is likely because we purchased our house in 2011 at a price higher than it was most recently appraised for. Has anyone else received a similar notice? We have not yet decided how we are going to approach this appeal - if you have any advice it would be appreciated. Best, Breanna

[Highland Park] Prius Auxiliary Battery Replacement Info

Responses from our post last week - we ended up going to Interstate battery for $280: I think we went to /Sears. I've taken it over to North Hills Toyota a few times for maintenance already. Haven't had any issues so far. They replaced the battery. I just checked for the receipt - it was $292 with parts and labor. Had it done at the Spitzer Toyota dealer on Route 22 past Monroeville. They were very friendly and quick. We had our starter battery replaced at Baum Blvd Automotive, I think this is the same as the auxiliary battery. The battery was expensive. -- L.Fusco, MPH

[Highland Park] An internet mapping system showing the growth of HP

While browsing the internet in search of the old gasoline station that used to exist at the end of Friendship Park at the intersection of Edmond Street, I came across a wonderful mapping system that is great for finding out about your house and others in the Highland Park area. The site, peoplemaps.esri.com, takes the old plat book maps from 1835 on and merges them electronically up to around 1923 and then uses the various aerial picture maps up to 2012. The old, color plat maps not only show the property lines, they also show the outline of the houses and often the names of the owners at that time. It is delightful because you can see how the area around your house grew up and the neighborhood changed. It is simple to use with the slider along the top covering the 1835 period onward. If you have a PC with a mouse with a scroll wheel I have found that the easiest way to get to HP is use the slider to get to the 1900s and then change the map size with the scroll wheel to something more readable. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the map until you can see the reservoirs. From there, finding the way to your own area is fairly easy. I thought one interesting thing was seeing how the driveway from the old King Mansion originally came out around the Stanton Negley pharmacy and, over time, moved back to the end of Elgin Street. If you focus on the current sheltered bus stop at Negley and Wellesley, you can see it used to be the driveway gate for the Barnsdall house that once occupied the property in 1923 although the driveway was moved shortly before that.. While I have seen the individual old plat maps before, this electronically merged display is much nicer and the people who did it deserve a lot of credit. Hi, My son's Honda Accord developed an electrical problem that our mechanic cannot fix. We've already replaced the battery and alternator to no avail. Can anyone recommend any Honda dealers that do good work? We didn't care for the Shadyside dealer when we brought the car in for a recall. Please send me your likes and dislikes. Thanks Karen
