Dear Highland Park Families, I am a co-founder of Three Rivers Village School, a democratic school for children and teens ages 5-18.. It will be located right next door in Stanton Heights. We are currently enrolling students for the 2013-14 school year. The school is inspired by several proven model schools in Boston, Albany, and Harrisburg. Three Rivers Village School offers a program unlike any other in Pittsburgh. Three Rivers Village School (TRVS) will provide an environment where children and teens can navigate the authentic challenges of their lives, preparing them to navigate the authentic challenges of adulthood. TRVS understands and trusts that children learn best when driven by internal motivation, following their chosen rhythm and path. Students who enroll in our program may pursue all safe and lawful activities that they choose as long as those activities do not infringe on the freedom of the community. These activities are not required to be conducted within the walls of the school. The world is our classroom. Additionally, the school is administered in a democratic fashion, with students and staff each having one vote. This provides opportunity for students to have a deep sense of responsibility for their school and peers, while working collectivly toward shared goals. Three Rivers Village School admits students without regard to family financial ability to pay. We are deeply committed to being accessible to families of all income levels through our financial aid program. All families who are interested in attending the school are encouraged to fill out the Financial Aid Application. There are many ways for students, parents, educators, and community members to learn more. 1) Come to an event: We are hosting a series of information sessions over the next few months. We will give a 15 minute presentation and then have time for Q&A and individual discussion. This is a great time to meet the founders and staff of Three Rivers Village School. Hello Neighbors! I'm an experience violin and viola teacher. I'm teaching at hope academy located at 116 S. Highland Avenue, 15206. I'm offering private Music classes for children starting as young as 30 months old and up. I have my BA in Early Childhood Education and Music and I also have my MS from Duquesne University. The spring term will start on April 6th until June 1st. INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY CALL TO ACTION FOCUSING ON THE ABUSE OF WOMEN IN THE MILITARY MARCH 8, 7:00-9:00 PM FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE (OAKLAND) 4836 Ellsworth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 International Women's Day will be recognized with a screening of the Academy award nominated film, "The Invisible War" focusing on the abuse of women in the military, followed by a discussion and Question and Answer period with local experts, Edith Bell, Helen Gerhardt, Francine Porter, and Scilla Wahrhaftig, answering questions. The event will be held on Friday, March 8, at 7PM at the Friends Meeting House, 4836 Ellsworth Ave. in Oakland and is being organized by the Women's League for International Peace and Freedom, the American Friends Service Committee of PA, and the Thomas Merton Center. The event is free and open to the public. March 8 is the Women's International Day of Peace. This event helps us focus on the challenges that women face in the military. The international community realizes that a just and lasting world peace cannot be achieved without full and equal participation of women in matters of peace and security, since women are disproportionately affected by armed conflict, rape and domestic violence. The UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was passed in 1979 and signed by President Jimmy Carter, however the US Senate has never ratified it. Also, in October 2000 UN Security Council Resolution 1325 was adopted. It mandates participation of women in all levels of decision making in conflict, post-conflict, peacekeeping missions and conflict prevention. Each country was tasked with developing a National Action Plan. The US released its NAP in December 2011, however it deals mostly with protection of women, not access to decision-making and prevention. President Obama's new cabinet has no women members. We see more hope for the Senate where we have more women senators than ever before. Now is the time for the US to ratify CEDAW by addressing this with our Senators. This year as we celebrate the International Women's Day we need to take up the work to address the impact of war on women both as innocent victims of violence, rape and displacement in the civilian population as well as the abuse within the armed forces.
