[Highland Park] Neighborhood Listening Project

Come and be a listener! Listen to your friends, your neighbors, or just someone interesting in your community. The American Friends Service Committee PA (a peace and justice organization) will be conducting a listening project in East Liberty, Larimer, and Highland Park to enable people to know each other a little better and to bring together the community. We hope to use the findings in the fall and spring when we work with youth to create a project that helps to bring positive change to our community. To prepare people for listening we will conduct our first listening training on August 5th from 2-4:30pm. Other training dates will be available. Interested? [Highland Park] 226 N Negley

Dear Neighbors, Update on the zoning hearing for a convenience store at 226 N Negley Avenue: I wanted to let you know that the applicants for the variance requested a continuance (or delay) of their hearing until August. The Zoning Board of Adjustment granted that continuance provided that the applicant meet with ELDI and Bloomfield Garfield Corporation, the community development group based in Garfield. Garfield borders East Liberty at Negley Avenue. The zoning hearing was rescheduled for August 9th around 10A. The Zoning Board of Adjustment will make their decision at that hearing. We had a good showing at the hearing; several neighbors showed up to voice their opposition to the convenience store. We want to thank those of you who took the time to come in, and to those who wrote letters, for your help. Representatives from ELDI and Bloomfield Garfield Corp. will meet with the convenience store owners; and hear what their plans are for the property. Though its difficult to see how this use would be beneficial to the neighborhood given the increase in traffic on both Negley Ave and Rural Street, the potential for additional public safety concerns similar to those at the Sunoco across the street, and the potential for this convenience store to sell blunts, rolling papers or alcohol either now or in the future, the Zoning Board did request that we meet with the applicant. I will keep everyone posted on this google groups page on the outcomes of that meeting. *If any are able to make the August 9th hearing, your attendance would be greatly appreciated. * * * *We are still accepting letters.
