[Highland Park] aggressive driver on Jackson Street

On Easter Sunday afternoon, I witnessed a young man in a brownish colored, older model, Buick sedan, license plate (I think) DHW 8124, driving aggressively and in a menacing and threatening manner in order to harass and intimidate a fellow (female) resident of Jackson Street while she was stopped at an intersection. I attempted to intervene and I have already made the Zone 5 police aware of the incident. Please don't hesitate to follow up with a phone call to the police if you witness similar behavior on the part pf this young man or anybody else. In a neighborhood full of kids that play outside and people walking their dogs, aggressive driving and threatening behavior behind the wheel of a car can't be tolerated. Olga Watkins * *

Dixon, M.D., Director Dave Zazac, Public Information Assistant 412-578-8004, e-mail: dzazac(a)achd.net For Release: Friday, April 22, 2011 AGENCIES ISSUE PUBLIC APPEAL IN RABIES CASE The Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture are urging a couple whose black Labrador Retriever fought with a raccoon on the panhandle part of the Montour Trail on the evening of April 19, to call the Department of Agriculture at 724-443-1585. The dog-raccoon encounter took place at the Sturgeon/McDonald part of the trail. The raccoon tested positive for rabies yesterday after it was killed and submitted to the Health Department for testing. The rabies vaccination status of the dog exposed to the raccoon is unknown at this time. For the health and safety of the pet and its owners, please call the state's Veterinary Medical Field Officer, Dr. Erin Moore at the phone number listed above. "We're encouraging this dog's owners to come forward, so that their pet can be evaluated and treated, if necessary, without delay," said County Health Director Dr. Bruce W. Dixon. "Spring is the time when owners can help prevent encounters with increasingly active wildlife and stray animals," Dr. Dixon added. "Avoid contact with them and call 911 or the local animal control service." "Raccoons have the highest incidence of wildlife rabies in the state," said Dr. Moore. "It is very important to have your dogs and cats vaccinated for rabies to prevent this disease." Rabies exposures typically occur through a break in the skin that comes in contact with an infected animal's saliva. The disease is almost always fatal when left untreated. If there is additional contact information about this case, call the County Health Department at 412-687-ACHD. This is the second rabid animal, both raccoons, reported in the County this year. Five rabid animals were reported in 2010 - one raccoon, three bats and a fox. # # #

Gene, you are SO right! I always tell people to put these two numbers in your cell. Calling Animal Control Directly saves time and you get right to their dispatch. If you lose or find a dog the ARL receives all dogs from Animal Control. Many dogs are chipped and the ARL can scan the dog and get in touch with the owners. It is your choice whether or not you want to leave a dog you found at the ARL but they will continue to try to reach the owner regardless. So those two numbers: Animal Control 412-255-2036 and the ARL at 412-661-6452. Lost and found is ext. 215. Just a little FYI. They will send out animal control to handle the situation. I had a problem last year with a dog off a leash attacking my dog. I got the car license number and they were contacted by police and there dog had no rabies shots or dog license. It happened to be someone from the suburbs. Get all the info you can and call imediately. Animal control will come and take your report. And if your cell phone has a camera, thats even better. And carrying a stick (piece of broom handle) as a walking stick also serves as a good defence against agressive dogs off the leash! On Thursday, around 6 PM, I was walking my dog on leash by the farmhouse. A teenage boy on his bike, with his dog running behind him, came from the opposite direction. When they got to us, his dog, which was off leash, attacked my dog. The boy immediately jumped off his bike, tackled his dog and held him down so that we were able to leave the area. I did not think at the time that my dog had been injured or even to get the boy's name or information. After I got home I saw that my dog did have two gashes that needed a trip to the vet and did require medical attention. If you are the owner of this dog, or know the owner and could pass the information along to me, I would appreciate it. All I really remember about them is that it was a big, I'm fairly certain, German Shephard, and the boy was shirtless at the time, on a bike, had a little bit longer, but not long, wavy hair. I think he was very worried also and was very respectful. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank-you. -- --
