[Highland Park] selling wide, configurable child safety gate

A child safety gate right at the top of stairs can leave you balancing and juggling things at the same time. Many homes like ours in Highland Park have a large second floor landing. We took advantage of the landing with a wide, configurable gate to make things safe and easy for us. The attached photo shows how we set it up. The basic unit comes with the gate that opens and two side panels. The panels adjust in 10 degree increments and can be angled or set in a straight line as needed. The latch very secure but can be opened by an adult with a one-handed squeeze grip (no buttons to push or levers to raise). The walk-through section opens both forward and backward. This gate comes with two additional 24" extensions which really make it possible to lay out the gate across a wide area. The ends are secured with screws to a wall or molding. [Highland Park] old cedar wardrobe

We have an old, rather shabby cedar wardrobe that we have kept, intending to refinish it and restore it to a decent piece of furniture. Unfortunately, we just don't have anywhere to put it anymore. It is on the front porch at 827 N. Euclid Ave. and it is free! It is bulky, but lightweight for its size. If you come early Wednesday, please do not take the 2 bright yellow bags on the front porch. Those are for the Viet Nam Veterans of America. If you don't know about VVA - it is a nonprofit that collects small items - not furniture. They take clothing, small appliances, toys, etc. - AND THEY PICK THEM UP FROM YOUR HOUSE! You just gather the items you no longer need and put them in bags or boxes. You then go to their website PickUpPlease.org (or Google VVA, which is what I usually do) and choose a date for them to come. Leave the bags on your porch in the morning, and they come and take them during the day. It's like having the fairies come and help you with your housework. It's a great organization - and you get a tax deduction with minimal effort. I can also recommend Off The Floor Pittsburgh. (offthefloorpittsburgh.org) They collect furniture and bedding for people who have managed to get a place to live, but have no furniture - and so are eating and sleeping on the floor. They have been to my house a couple times to pick up dressers, storage units, and gently used (and clean) linens. Over the past few years, my husband and I have liquidated the households of 3 elderly relatives and had lots of stuff that we just could not use. These people are a dream. Google them and read the stories. I just checked their website - they have been inundated with requests and can't pick up right now, but you can call to arrange a time and deliver furniture to their North Side warehouse. There is one dresser in particular that I remember. A great dresser. Oak, dovetailed drawers, solid, and clean. Unfortunately, my mother-in- law had painted it white and put pink decals on it. It had not sold at the yard sale. I called Salvation Army and they came, looked at it, and sniffed. "We only take furniture in 'like new' condition." They left it. I turned to Off the Floor. The coordinator came out with the pick up crew. When she saw the dresser, she said, "This is just what I have been looking for. It will not even go to the warehouse. We will drive from your house to a person who really needs a nice dresser. She will love it." My heart melted. So little effort on my part made a difference in someone else's life. Remember Off the Floor when you have that piece of furniture, those pots and pans, those sheets and blankets. Happy New Year to all, Jan McKeag

[Highland Park] Searching for new vet-results

You guys are amazing! I got 44 emails with excellent suggestions and very honest opinions. I am sharing the general results since I was asked to share. 12 people suggested Dr. Bebko's Cat Clinic in Bloomfield, many shared the stories behind this support 7 people suggested Point Breeze Clinic also with good stories 7 people suggested East End Veterinary, but one person said not to go there 4 people suggested VCA Fox Chapel 4 people ssuggested Spay and Vaccination, but one person advised against it Other suggestions: Dr. Ruble Vet to Pet, Harts Run Veterinary, Pittsburgh Animal Hospital (my current clinic, not happy with it), Rick Rogow, west End in the North Side and Greenfield Vet. I think I will be calling both the Cat Clinic and the Point Breeze Clinic to research them a bit, but both look like a good option. And I have plenty of other places to use as back ups if I don't like any of them. Thank you very much everybody! I am seriously amazed at the great response! Coty.-

[Highland Park] Jinju still needs a home!

Hi everyone. I'm putting another shout out for a home for my sweet foster kitty. As you may recall she was a humane investigations intake at Animal Friends a few years ago, and was adopted and returned through no fault of her own. The shelter environment is stressful for her which is why she is in foster with me and I would hate to have to take her back there. Jinju is a petite, gorgeous long haired grey and white kitty, fixed with all her shots. She is a little shy at first and is a little sensitive about having her face approached but has warmed up beautifully in the month or so she has been here. She does well with other cats and used to live with dogs. She has excellent litter box skills and other manners. She eagerly solicits attention and likes to sleep on the bed with me. Through the end of the year AF is having a no cost adoption promotion for cats over 2 years of age, and Jinju qualifies. Please please consider offering this sweet girl her forever home.
