Dear nieghbors, Around March or April I remember reading in the Post-Gazette that there is a hot line you can call to request repaving of your street. At the time, I was a bad citizen and thought someone else would definitely make the call, and never noted down the number. Does anyone have this number? I think Beverly Place is long overdue for repaving and would like to make that call now if the hot line still exists. Thanks, Neepa Majumdar

Dear neighbors, we have two light fixtures with ceiling fans to sell. They are simple but in good shape. One is larger (ca. 55" diameter) with white or tan wood blades, one smaller (ca. 43") with colored or white blades (blades can be flipped around in both). We're giving them away for $10 and $15 dollars, respectively. Also, we are selling a brand new 70 pound Everlast heavy bag (without stand) for $50. It is with deep sadness that I pass along the word that Mike Eversmeyer died this morning, following the recurrence of the cancer he was treated for last year. Long-time St. Andrean, Property Committee Chair, Vestryman, Junior Warden, counselor, neighbor, and friend. Mike was of course a leader in the Highland Park neighborhood and a key leader in the project that led to the designation of the neighborhood as a national Historic District. Janna, Alex, and James were at home with him, and his parents and other family were with him yesterday. Please keep Mike and his family in your best thoughts and prayers. I will pass along word about services and other arrangements as they are decided. Hi, I'm very confused about this whole issue. I live in my own house, which has an apartment on the first floor that was there long before I bought the house. No one ever mentioned an occupancy permit to me until this new ordinance was passed. Even then, I never received any official notice from the city about the ordinance. In fact, I wouldn't even have known about it if it weren't for this list. (Thanks!) Anyway, I paid the fee months ago and was told by someone in the office handling this that if I paid the fee online (which I did, for a surcharge) then they would research the issue of the occupancy permit and let me know if I needed to do anything about it. I've yet to hear anything from anyone about it. So now, I gather, there's yet another "new" ordinance that I might have to deal with! I'm all in favor or cracking down on slum lords and absent landlords. So, I'm not against having an ordinance that addresses that problem. But either ordinance just seems like a way the city wants to make some money. I'm not even against that. I just wish the ordinance would be directed at landlords who are not taking care of their properties. Maybe that's what the Occupancy Permit is supposed to address? I also agree that the fee should be either waived or be minimal for little guys like me who live in a house and are just renting out an apartment or two. [Highland Park] Street Trees Follow-up

Dear Neighbors I would like to update everyone about the progress we have made on getting street trees for our neighborhood. About 5 months ago I sent an email to the list asking for interest in street trees. I was overwhelmed by the response. I received over 100 requests and was unable to respond to them all individually. I was able to meet with a small group of volunteers and put in an application to TreeVitalize Pittsburgh (http://www.paconserve.org/216/treevitalize) for a fall planting of trees along Stanton Ave. between Negley and Highland avenues. I would like to put in an application for the spring to plant along N Highland Ave. between Stanton and the Park entrance. The deadline for the application is Sept. 4th. Once again I need your help with the following: 1. If you live on North Highland Ave and would like one or more street trees in your yard or your sidewalk, please respond to this email with your address so that I can drop a tree request form off at your house. The trees are free. The form requires only your address and signature. If you want more details about the program, or about the benefits of trees to you and our community, check out the TreeVitalize website. 2. I need 3-4 other people willing to spend some time organizing this. This will take a total of about 5 hours of your time. I can only put in this application if I get a few others to help with the work. For those of you who live in other parts of Highland Park and wonder what happened to your request, here are the issues: 1. I got requests from people on practically every street in the Neighborhood. 2. TreeVitalize will only deliver trees to one street at a time (for logistical reasons) 3.
