I want to thank everyone for the response. I guess all we need to do is cover where everyone is going to patrol. I suggest that we email where each of us is going to cover what streets. I also suggest that we have someone or someones with us and cell phones. Maybe after this we can do as suggested as the city suggested but for now I think that we should at least get out and try right now to prevent any occurances during the most time pranks occur. Could someone please explain to me what "Major's 311 hotline" is? If it's ok with everyone if I contact Officer Gay and tell him what we are planning to do? Also, why is it that when people send emails in that they do not describe to everyone else who the people look like that they are having suspisons about? Where they black? Tall? hair? clothes? I'm curious to know if we are describeing the same people. Anyway try to contact me during the day. Paul 412-661-8756.

Our family is for this!! We are in the 1100 block of N. Highland. in the meantime - if you witness something or you are the victim YOU must report any incidents to the police; this is the only way our neighborhood will have more and better patrolling. The police were out strong catching speeders along N. Highland all summer and that came about due to numerous complaints of drivers going over the speed limit. Also call the Major's Hotline '311' and send a message there! Hi, neighbors, Do you have a great babysitter whose name you're willing to share? Our usual (and much loved) babysitters are exceptionally busy this semester with college apps and new full-time jobs, so we're looking for someone to help fill in the gaps. We are hoping to find someone available for occasional weeknights and weekend evenings (a few times/month). We'd like someone trustworthy and kind, and someone who is willing to play with our daughter (who is 7) instead of just planting her in front of the TV. [Highland Park] Over the weekend...

(Apologies if this gets posted multiple times, my connection timed out) We called the police on Saturday morning because I found an empty backpack on our front lawn with a bunch of receipts, canceled checks, and other items strewn on the street (N Highland). Having lived for years in several other cities with random crime, it had the familiar look of a personal effect that had been stolen, rummaged through, and tossed. We called the non emergency police number and they said to call 911, which we did. But when the officer arrived she was somewhat upset that we had called 911 and made a bunch of comments complaining about the lack of a real crime scene, and basically lecturing me on when to call 911 (even though we were instructed to do so, which I didn't realize when I was talking to her because my wife had made the call while I was outside). She seemed unimpressed with the possibility that this could be a crime, but she took the bag with her. This officer's supervisor called me later to follow up on our call, and he confirmed that indeed we had done the right thing despite what the responding officer said, and that at any rate ordinary citizens are not expected to be sophisticated criminal investigators. He was appreciative that we were concerned citizens and said that as a neighborhood we should err on the side of reporting things that don't seem right. He said he would give this feedback to the officer as well. I thought that if someone had complained of a stolen bag, then they could have the physical evidence and location where it was dumped to try to piece together what had happened. Clearly I am not a professional crime fighter but we felt compelled to take a more questioning look at something unusual on our doorstep. _________________________________________________________________ Want to read Hotmail messages in Outlook? [Highland Park] Incident Sunday early morning

In light of the recent break-ins that we've been experiencing in HP, I wanted to alert the neighborhood to something I saw Sunday morning... I was driving down Farragut St. early in the morning to pick up my son from his friend's house in the 800 block of Farragut St. As I approached the corner of Farragut (900 block) and Jackson, I saw a man just lingering on the corner. It was 1:45 am and pouring down rain. Something just didn't feel right to me, so after picking up my son, I decided to circle the block and go back up Farragut to see if he was still there. He was, but this time he was joined by two younger men, possibly older teens. My gut instinct told me that something was up. When I got home, I called 911 and reported what I had seen. I apologized to the dispatcher for possibly reporting something that might seem trivial, but he disagreed with me and said I did the right thing and that at 1:30 in the morning in the pouring rain, these guys were probably up to no good. I don't know if the police were sent to checked it out. Once again, illustrates the need for all of us to keep our eyes open as we drive our neighborhood streets and to listen to our instincts — no matter the time of day. If something looks suspicious or just doesn't feel right, report it and let the police determine its validity. Marcie McGuire
