Two boys just came to my front door, telling me they're raising money for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. They're selling yoga workout cds (!) for $5.00 each. I asked for their Scout ID, and they told me they left it at home. Hi neighbors, Yes, the same two boys have also come to our house on Jackson on numerous occasions (at least 3) , selling those DVD's (today and last week) and even Superballs (last night). It's definitely a problem that these boys are learning to scam at a young age. What worries me more is the safety issue. These boys are young (MUST be under 10 or younger)- They have knocked on our door after 8 at night....I worry about what might happen to these young boys when they are soliciting strangers door-to-door. [Highland Park] kids "fund-raising"

Hi everyone, Today two children on bikes came to my house to ask if we would buy a DVD as part of a fund-raising event for the Boys' and Girls' Club of America. They had only the DVDs (about fitness, with a McDonald's logo on it) and no documentation that the Boys' and Girls' Clubs would be involved in sending little kids door-to-door selling things. I did call Boys' and Girls' Club (a local branch, and then the administrative offices for this area) to double-check that this is not by some fluke actually legitimate. Naturally, it turns out that, like the Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Boys' and Girls' Clubs don't send children out fund-raising to strangers. Just thought folks would want to know. -EL

thanks to everyone (lots of you!) who sent tree service suggestions. we opted for hellmann's tree service --phone # 921-7149. they promptly gave us an estimate, and took out the tree only a few days after we called to accept their bid. the hellman people are fast, thorough, and extremely pleasant. they did no damage to our front yard, and they cleaned up everything perfectly including our neighbor's side walk. their price was the second lowest of the several bids we got, and it wasn't much higher than the lowest. the lowest bid came from a service who couldn't do the work for a month or maybe a litte more. so we're enthusiastic about hellmann's tree service. thanks again, jim bogen

[Highland Park] question re: bathroom renovations

We are looking for a good general contractor who can help us renovate our kitchen. The man who lived here previously put in several walls on the first floor to create a rather large powder room, and closed off a doorway, among other renovations. The kitchen is not necessarily small but very awkward, and we can't open the fridge door without smashng into the kitchen table. Or the dishwasher. Or another person standing in the kitchen. You get the idea.... We would like either rip out the powder room (or reduce it in size/orientation if that's possible) and rip out the walls that chop up the kitchen. And find a better place for the fridge and install a wall oven. Some cabinetry will be involved, I imagine. We are not sure exactly what can be done, and we will need some asisstance figuring that out (load-bearing walls, etc.) Has anyone had experience with this sort of renovation and can recommend a really good general contractor? Thanks!

Pittsburgh is taking notice of East Liberty and its recent developments, and this is not happening by chance. Please help us keep the momentum going and pass the word on! On Tuesday September 18 from 6 to 8 pm, East Liberty will hold its second Community Meeting of the summer at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. East Liberty began its discussion of an updated Community Plan in late 2003 and early 2004 with the formation of Task Forces focused on key neighborhood issues. This past June, the community reconvened to begin action planning. This community meeting will lay the framework for up-coming developments by reinvigorating the community Task Forces. We need the your support to make these Task Forces the diverse, powerful representations of East Liberty that are necessary for this new plan to be a success. These Task Forces will address eight areas that have been highlighted by community stakeholders for their importance to the continued progress of East Liberty. The Task Forces to be convened are: - Safe Neighborhoods – The members of this team will explore realistic, sustainable approaches to East Liberty's issues with drugs, violence and crime. - Workforce – This team will work to ensure that the residents of the neighborhood will benefit from the up-and-coming economic and business developments through local, quality employment. - Youth Engagement – This Task Force will explore and highlight positive scholastic and extra-curricular options for our youth. - Healthy Community Members – This group will strategize ways to help the community to learn about, understand and embrace the importance of healthy, constructive lifestyles and habits. - Housing – This team will find ways to ensure that existing and planned housing provide a high quality of life for everyone in the neighborhood. - Parks and Recreation – This Task Force will explore strategies to ensure that East Liberty will have clean, healthy and green places for all ages to enjoy. - Commercial Core Planning – This Task Force will underscore the importance of approaching current and future commercial development in a thoughtful, strategic manner to ensure the best outcome for those who live, work and play in East Liberty. - Small Business – This team will investigate strategies to support the growth and vitality of small businesses which are integral to preserving the culture of East Liberty. We have to go out of town early Friday morning until late Sunday night. We are in need of an individual to dog sit in your home our 1 year old 3 pound yorkie named MoMo. He is lovable, sweet, very good with children, other dogs and cats. He is up to date on his shots. He is house trained but use pee pads if left alone for long periods of time. He loves walks in the park and cuddling. He sleeps in his own little bed at night. We would take him but he gets car sick very easily and would make for a very miserable trip for him.
