Last opportunity for the year! Volunteers needed! It's back to school time, and with that comes new beginnings and new opportunities. But the opportunities don't need to end in the classroom! The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) needs your help at its collection for "hard to recycle" items on Saturday, September 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is the last event in 2006. Taking place at Construction Junction (214 N. Lexington Street, East End--Pittsburgh), the event calls for residents to drop off cell phones, electronics, latex paint, tires, large appliances, phone books, bottles, cans and other items. All materials will be refurbished, recycled, or safely disposed of. A nominal fee will be charged for some, but not all items. PRC needs the help of volunteers to unload material from vehicles and to direct traffic in the parking lot. Refreshments will be provided by Whole Foods Market. All volunteers will receive a coupon for one free hour of kayaking courtesy of Kayak Pittsburgh. Lend a hand outside while the weather's still warm! Are you looking for a place where you can donate furniture, gently used clothing and toys, and books? Consider donating to Parental Stress Center (PSC). PSC is located in East Liberty and serves many families who are facing economic difficulties. We are currently looking for donations of household items for PSC's Family Empowerment Housing program - which houses formerly homeless families in which at least one member of the family has a disability. Donations will also be distributed to families served through our Family Unification Services (FUS) program. If possible, we ask that you arrange to drop off your donation to the PSC Family Center located across from AAA and Pizza Hut in Penn Circle (5877 Commerce Street, Pittsburgh PA 15206). [Highland Park] Windshield smashed

Yes, they're at it again! Last week the front windshield of my car was smashed. My car was parked in front of my house...I live at 922 Mellon Street in the Southwest Quadrant of Highland Park. This incedent happened at 4:10 am Friday morning August 18th, and the offenders were two black males, approximately 15-19 years old. One was wearing an oversized white t-shirt and long denim shorts, the other was wearing black t-shirt, black long shorts and a black baseball cap. The fled on foot south on Mellon Street towards Jackson. If you have any information, or if you saw or heard anything this morning around this time, please give me a call. And, if you have a windshield, or know how to install one, please give me a call...I am currently unemployed and can't afford this! Thanks! Shelly

Bringing New Energy to Pittsburgh - Everyone is welcome! The Kiwanis Club of East Liberty has invited Glenda Murphy and Earl Elder from Duquesne Light to speak at the Union Project cafe this Thursday,August 24th at 5:30 PM. Over the next few years, Duquesne Light will be making a $500 million upgrade of this region's electrical infrastructure and plans to provide Pittsburghers with secure, safe, and reliable sources of electricity. This project will create new jobs for our community. Glenda and Earl will address these changes. Join us for this informative program at the Union Station cafe on the corner of Stanton and N. Negley. We are starting the process of re-doing our kitchen. New cabinets, floors, and countertops. We have started talking to cabinet stores and their options to do the install as well, but wondered about getting our own contractor to do the install. We are looking for Highland Park volunteers who are interested in participating in a community building beautification project that will focus on cleaning up East Liberty within Penn Circle - on September 23, 2006 from 10 am to 2 pm. The activity will begin at 10:00 am at the PSC Family Center - located across from Whole Foods and AAA in East Liberty. A safety training will be given by Home Depot employees prior to the start of the activity. Volunteers will be provided with gloves and garbage bags and work in teams of 10. The day will end with a shared lunch and information about how you can get more involved with East End community-friendly organizations.
