[Highland Park] House Tour Volunteers still needed

I'm writing to let you know that we're still looking for volunteers for the day of the house tour. The date of the tour is Saturday, October 1st and the time is 11am to 7pm. There will be two volunteer shifts - one from 10:45am to 3pm and one from 2:45 pm to 7pm. Please send email to housetour(a)highlandparkpa.com or call 412-665-3646 to let us know that you are interested. The volunteers who will be speaking to visitors at the King Estate will be meeting with Dr. Brown shortly to be "trained", so if you are specifically interested in volunteering there, please let us know asap so we can sign you up (the training date has not yet been set, but it will be soon). We will have one person in each room of the King Estate, giving the history of that room to the groups coming through. Volunteers will not be required to memorize the information prepared by Dr. Brown, but it will need to be presented in a clear and friendly manner. If you are not interested in presenting information, there are plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer at other homes. All volunteers will receive a free ticket to the house tour, so they can take the tour during the shift they aren't working. UPDATE: We’ve got some great news to share – we are 89% finished with our Phase I campaign to raise $1,646,000 to renovate the Union Project! When the remaining funds are pledged, Union Station (the café partnership with Peabody High School Culinary Arts Academy students) construction can be completed within weeks, and the café will open this fall! [Highland Park] Concrete work

A couple of weeks ago someone was asking for a referral for concrete work--finally dug out the card. Steve Scotti, 412-828-2001. Replaced steps and walkway through our back yard with aggregate. Looks great. We got several estimates; his was the most reasonable, his crew were good guys, did it in 3-4 days--removal of old steps/walk, forms, pouring/finishing. He also does french drains, block work, footers, light excavation, snow removal. He lives in Verona, so he likes work here, nearby. Avram

A violinist-artist - single woman with two small well-behaved cats - is seeking a living space in this general area. She says the ideal would be a carriage house-garage type apartment with good light, and maybe a little gardening space. She can currently afford very little, about $450/month (including utilities!). Has anyone ever complained to DPW regarding the piles of broken glass that the recycling truck leaves on the street wherever it stops? Is it pointless to call them? It might not be a problem for car tires but my bikes sure do not like it. Thanks, Kevin

We used a man named John McLane, and are happy with the results. He was fast, inexpensive, and followed up on his work later (had to make a small adjustment after he inspected). He's a general handyman, not specializing in gutters. Sorry Shari - yes, he's African American in his 30s, medium skin color, average height (5'9" or so) and slim build. He has a mustache. Several posters have described him wearing a NY Yankees baseball hat (dark blue with a white NY on the front); when I was approached by him he wore that type of hat with an orange T-shirt with the ECKO brand all over it. He was very polite, but he's clearly running a scam - although he may well be married with 2 kids, as he said.
