Education Innovations is looking for teachers, students, Pittsburgh community members, and parents who would be willing to give their two cents worth on the ideal education experience for children. We are hosting a series of focus groups in mid to late September. We are looking for specific feedback with each focus group so read the description before getting involved. All focus groups will take place at the Education Innovations, Inc. offices in the Kingsley Association at 6435 Frankstown Avenue, at the intersection of Frankstown Avenue and East Liberty Blvd. Community Focus Group *When: Wednesday September 14, 2005 *Time: 6:30pm 8:30pm *Location: Kingsley Association 6435 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 *Working Title/question: How does a school fit into the life of the community? What we are going for here is for your input on how a school goes beyond being located in a community, or how a school can be another friend in the community. *Who we are looking for: Pittsburgh community members at large, parents, students, businesses, etc. Critical Thinking/Workforce Forum *Date: Wednesday September 21 *Time 6:30pm 8:30pm *Location: Kingsley Association 6435 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 *Working Title: "Critical Thinking: the foundation for a creative and productive workforce." What we are going for here is to gather expert opinion on the role of primary and secondary education in preparing students for the workforce. Further, we are looking for expert opinion on the role of scientific principles (inquiry, creative problem solving) in the creative workforce. *Who we are looking for: workforce leaders, heads of science related companies, foundations who fund science/critical thinking initiatives Teacher Focus Group *Date: Wednesday September 28, 2005 *Time: 6:30pm 8:30pm *Location: Kingsley Association 6435 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 *Working Questions: What makes you /would make an innovative and creative teacher? Who we are looking for: Teachers who teach in a school environment, whether charter school/public school, or private school, who would like to share their thoughts on how school systems (i.e., teaching, assessment, training systems etc.) make them./would make them innovative and creative teachers. Dear Highland Park Neighbors, I have been away in training for the past three weeks, and only returned last week to see the flurry of emails regarding "Tony." I have sent the emails to a team of three plainclothes detectives with the basic descriptions, locations and times of occurrences. The officers will canvass the area in an attempt to locate "Tony." In the interim, PLEASE do not give him any money. I would also caution residents regarding opening their doors to a complete stranger late at night. When calling 911 give the operator a detailed description...clothing and direction of travel. I know it seems like it can take forever for an officer to arrive, but they will get there as dispatched. Also, let the 911 operator know if you would like to talk to the police officer. Many of you write that an officer just drove past the scene, and did not get out of the car, but it is very difficult to do more than that, if there is no one to confer with upon arrival. I'm not involved with the planning of the House Tour, but I'd like to add a word of encouragement to anyone thinking about volunteering. Each of the house tours around the city (Southside, Northside, et al.) gives the host neighborhood a chance to shine in the spotlight for a day. There is always a newspaper article that draws attention to the beauty of the neighborhood. It adds to the luster of the place. It gets people thinking, "Maybe I'd like to live there, too". We, as a neighborhood, should make sure this happens. I have no idea who's going to be watching the kids, but I've just volunteered for an early shift. All volunteers will receive a free ticket to the house tour, so they can take the tour during the shift they aren't working. - www.unionproject.org - Create Mosaic Furniture at Union Project! Students enrolled in this class will learn how to create their own glass mosaic furniture. Students will have the choice of working on tabletops that will remain at Union Project for use in Union Station café or students can provide their own furniture to mosaic. All other class materials and tools will be provided. Tools will remain the property of Union Project but will be available for use during class sessions. Cost for this class will be $125 per student. Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 12 pm beginning September 17 thru October 22.
