The Highland Park Community Development Corporation (HPCDC) and Pennsylvania State Senator Jim Ferlo invite you to tour the 800 block of Mellon Street in Highland Park on Thursday, October 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm. Come see the work the HPCDC and our development partners have been doing on the 800-block of Mellon Street where renovation projects at the Victorian Queen Anne style homes at 807, 813, 815, & 817 Mellon Street are in progress and renovation of the 7-unit Sutherland apartment building at 839 Mellon Street is expected to be complete soon. Rental and purchase information will be available at the event on Thursday, October 13, 2005. [Highland Park] Evensong at St. Andrew's

The traditional service of Choral Evensong is sung by the Choir of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Highland Park, Pittsburgh, at 8 p.m. on the First Thursday evening of each month, October-June, at 8 p.m. The choral service is followed each month by a musical recital--and then by a dessert reception in the Parish Hall. Thursday, October 6, 8 p.m. Choral Evensong: Service by Thomas Walmisley; Anthem, "O Thou the Central Orb," by Charles Wood. Recital: Rebecca Rollett, Organist, playing works by J.S. Bach. Dr. Rollett is an accomplished organist, an adjunct member of the music faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, and Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh Camerata. St. Andrew's is located at 5801 Hampton Street, between North Highland and North Negley Avenues, one block south of Bryant Street and four blocks south of the park, in the East End Pittsburgh neighborhood of Highland Park. [Highland Park] Walk in the Woods in Highland Park

Jessica Pedersen and I will lead a walk in Highland Park on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 starting at 6:30 pm at the fountain (Highland Avenue entrance to the park) and ending at 8:00 pm. (At this time of year it will be getting dark during the walk.) This walk is the last of the summer "Weekly Walks in the Woods" series in Highland Park, but there are weekly walks scheduled for the other parks for the remainder of the month. All of the walks are sponsored by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. The next walk in Highland Park will be on Saturday, November 5, 2005. Rudy

We just want to extend one more thank you to all of the volunteers, neighbors and especially the homeowners who helped to make the 2005 Highland Park House Tour the success that it was! We had a fabulous group of homes and sites this year, which showed everyone who came to the tour what a wonderful neighborhood we live in. And the gorgeous weather was certainly a great bonus, too. We are working on a final tally, but preliminary numbers make this year look like one of our best turnouts. Thanks to all of you who put up posters and passed the word along to friends and family, and a big thank you to Enrico's Tazza D'oro for selling all 100 of the pre-sale tickets we gave them! If you didn't see it, there was a great article about the King Estate in Saturday's Post-Gazette: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05274/580664.stm We are certainly lucky to have the Browns in our neighborhood, restoring a piece of Pittsburgh history and sharing it with all of us! The house tour committee will be having a wrap-up meeting in a couple of weeks before making our final report at the next HPCC meeting. [Highland Park] Suspicious behavior

Today around 5:30 we noticed a grey blue sedan with several young men (18-20 yrs)in it. One was out of the car near the bushes looking at a house at the end of Bunkerhill and when he saw us looking at him he asked for direction to Browning Street and then quickly left. Could be nothing, but in light of the recent break-ins we thought we should share this information. We called the police and they did a drive by. We didn't get the liscence plate number. Thanks. [Highland Park] One Last Reminder (if it isn't too late)

Tomorrow (Saturday!) is the Highland Park House Tour. This is our chance for our neighborhood to shine! Please help out any visitors that may look lost. Please park your vehicles in any off-street spaces that you have in order to maximize the on-street parking for our guests. And please pick up any litter that you notice around the neighborhood so we can make the best possible impression. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow at St. Andrews Episcopal Church beginning at 11am and the houses will be open until 7pm for the self-guided tour. Enjoy! Amy Maceyko
