I have experienced a similar situation with the tanning salon (Shadyside Tan) on Highland avenue also across the street from the Casbah...and regret to say that my daughter suffered severe 2nd degree burns and had to be hospitalized twice in 48 hours and was dangerously dehydrating, ... it was a horrendous experience...the proprietor was also extremely beligerent and loud and yelling at me and no speaking in a business and respectful tone of voice. Apparently, they had also just changed the bulbs and were very intense heat and did not inform people as they came into the salon... A terrible experience... I recently had a very negative experience with the manager and owner, Jeff Meyers, of the Econowash Laundry, 250 S. Highland Ave (across from Casbah) that I would like to share. I took in an all-cotton rug to be laundered by the drop off service. After I picked it up and brought it home I noticed there was a 6 inch cut in the rug and it was shredded about 4 inches wide. This is a very sturdy, tightly woven rug that could only be mangled by a machine in this way. I called to talk with Meyers about this but rather than dealing with me in an amicable way, he proceeded to yell over the phone. He was totally rude and disrespectful. He claimed the rug was old and worn out (though he did not see it himself) and was not harmed by the machine. He would hardly let me explain and hung up on me. Regardless of what I expect from a final outcome of such a dispute, I don't expect to be treated in this way by a business owner. I will not be patronizing this place again and so I am passing on this info. Hello Neighbors, As many of you know, Homewood Montessori is a pre-K through 8th grade Pittsburgh Public School magnet school. My 5-year-old son is a kindergartener at the school, loves going to school and is having a great experience. The Pittsburgh Public School magnet registration is November 1-12. Because of the school's expansion into a newly renovated facility, the school anticipates open spots for new students in all grade levels next year. If your child is entering Kindergarten next year, is eligible for the preschool (age 3 or 4 by September 1), or you are considering a school change for your older child, I hope you will consider Homewood Montessori. I have attached a detailed flyer with more information about upcoming activities. [Highland Park] Singalong

There will be a singalong for fun and friendship next Friday night October 22, 2004 at the home of Sherry Goldman and Marty Sivitz. We use Rise up Singing songbooks and other sources. If you don't have the book, don't worry... Someone will be happy to share with you. Accompanists (guitar or piano) are especially welcome. There may be a potluck first if there is enough interest. We'll start at 7:30 without a potluck, or 7:00 if there is one. Hi neighbors On Monday nights at the Nuin Center there is a hatha yoga class at 7:30. I have been attending this class for about a year and want it to continue. The Nuin Center has raised the rates for the space and, since there are only four of us in this class our instructor is looking for more students to cover her costs. A reminder to all that the Seventh Annual St. Andrew's Lecture will take place Friday evening October 15, beginning at 8 p.m. Our speaker is Dr. Robert Page. Dr. Page, Professor of Music at CMU and Director of Special Projects for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, is retiring this year at the end of his 26th season as Director of the Mendelssohn Choir. Dr. Page has been a leading figure in the renaissance of our region as a center for the creative and performing arts. Also featured at this year's Lecture will be St. Andrew's Guest Artist, Highland Park resident Ruth Mundundu, who as a "culinary artist" is a leading figure in our area's new focus on African cuisine. We'll enjoy a festive dessert reception reflecting the exciting cultural diversity of our neighborhood. (Ruth will also be the guest speaker at the Sunday morning "Coffee and" Conversation at St. Andrew's at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 17.) The event is free and open to the public, with all costs covered by the St. Andrew's Lecture Fund. Coffees at the reception courtesy of Amy Enrico and the Tazza d'Oro on North Highland Avenue. Hello All, Tazza D'Oro will be holding the last Presidential Debate Party tonight. PHEW!!! Is it time to vote yet??? Debate begins at 9 pm Gathering begins around 8 - 8:15 pm Tazza D'Oro will dig up some food and wine to share. But some of you have mentioned bringing some pot-luck stuff. I like the idea because I need some smells other than Tazza D'Oro. So, if you can, bring something to share (food,wine). I just wanted to tell everyone that you can recycle old telephone directories, rather than throwing them into a land fill. There is a recycling bin in the parking lot of Home Depot. Every little bit helps. Jean Clickner

Hi, I'm very glad that the Neighborhood list has been useful for folks when they are seeking information. I have a suggestion--one that should strike a balance with those who value having a smaller number of messages to read... When you send a request for information, ask for replies to be sent only to you--and offer to send a summary of responses. Wait a week or so for the responses to come in, then send a message summarizing the responses as briefly as possible. Rudy
