[Highland Park] Farmers' Market Cooperative of East Liberty Update
Hello Neighbors, I have not done an update for a few weeks due to being so busy with the Steel City Big Pour. But the Big Pour is behind me, so its back to the market. City of Pittsburgh Proclamation- The market was recently recognized through a proclamation made by the City Council. Councilman Dowd and Burgess were the sponsors. We were invited to come to City Council Chambers to receive the proclamation and say a few words about the market. I was able to make it and was joined by Val Kennnedy and the kids. We really appreciate the recognition and the opportunity to tell people about the market. Well fall is here and the weather is still warm, so there is still lots of local fruit and vegetables ripening in the fields. This is one of the best times of year for farmers markets because of the abundance of locally grown items available and the prices are so reasonable. A few highlights..... Consider picking up a bushel of tomatoes or other veggies to can for the winter. I go a bushel of tomatoes from the Kennedy's last week and made some puree which I froze in containers. Apples are now in their prime, so make sure you visit Kistaco Farm to get some of their wide selection of various varieties. The cider is tasting very good. Rick Zang is bringing in local grapes- Concords and Niagras from Erie County. Boy are they fragrant. They are great to eat or to make jelly. I bought 2 flats and made juice out of them which I will have available at the Kew Park Coffee Bar. The season is very short so get them while you can. The Kennedy Family Meat Stand will offer grass-fed beef. Many cuts are still available but Val recommends that you call the farm in advance. Many types of pork sausages will be available. Cut/wrapped/frozen beef selections from their show steer will be available. You can reach the farm at 724-898-2316. Call Monday through Friday, 9 am until 9 pm. I am sure that there will be a wide variety available at the market this Saturday. I have a fresh shipment of coffee beans from Jamaica. Please stop by the market this Saturday.
