Saving energy and money with compact fluorescent light bulbs just got a lot easier thanks to a new Watt Choices program from Duquesne Light. And to officially kick off the program, Duquesne Light is inviting its customers to a special event on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the East Liberty (400 N. Highland Ave.) and Ross Township (999 Ross Park Drive) Home Depot stores. Customers who attend can learn more about the benefits of CFLs and get a free 60-watt equivalent twist CFL for every CFL purchased (limit of six free bulbs per customer). The "buy one, get one free" pricing will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., along with prizes, other giveaways and an appearance by Wattley, the Duquesne Light CFL mascot. 96.9 BOB FM will be broadcasting live from the East Liberty event. The Watt Choices CFL program makes these energy-efficient light bulbs even more cost-effective by reducing their price at more than 100 local retailer locations. No coupons are necessary, and customers can purchase multiple discounted bulbs per store visit. Customers can find a complete list of retailers offering CFL discounts at www.wattchoices.com, or by calling toll-free (888) 379-8231. According to the ENERGY STAR Web site, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, that would save enough electricity to light more than three million homes for a year. Although CFLs usually cost more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they generate energy savings worth up to $30 per bulb over their lifetime, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Duquesne Light’s Watt Choices program helps customers conserve energy while lowering their electricity costs through rebates for the installation of energy-efficient equipment, online energy audits and the recycling of old refrigerators and freezers.
