[Highland Park] poor cell phone signal
Having replaced battery and then cell phone I continue to have problems with poor Verizon signal, dropped calls, inability to complete a call from home...1200 block of Sheridan. Today a call to Verizon support at 1-800-922-0204 finally got a person who is "writing a ticket for someone to come by and check the signal". This is supposed to be completed within the next 24 hours...by Wed. afternoon. Do others in Highland Park have a similar problem receiving Verizon's signal? Are there enough of us that Verizon might take action to improve service here? Margaret Curtin curtin@telerama.com

Verizon's signal is generally pretty weak for me (on Elgin St) ... not unusable, but definitely only one or two bars. I've never cared too much since I don't use my cell phone at home --- but why don't they have a tower on one of the nearby hilltops? Seems like if we don't have good signal here, there've got to be large parts of the East End that don't either. Just for reference, my wife has Sprint and her signal is spotty around here too. I suppose being a cell phone provider in geography as hilly as Western PA is its own special form of hell :-( regards, tom lane
I've discussed the sucky Verizon cell service in HP at high levels in Verizon Wireless on more than one occasion over years (I've had Verizon service since 1991). They consistently deny that there is any weakness in signal in HP. Duhhhhh. My personal belief is that they don't want to spend the large amount of money it takes to locate a tower in a city environment to serve an area that largely includes neighborhoods (East Liberty, Homewood-Brushton, for example) where cell phone usage is not as saturated as others (Shady Side, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, for example). I might add that I live at the very pinnacle of HP, so geography has nothing to do with this poor coverage. Hey, I have great ADSL service though - so I guess Verizon considers it a trade-off. Frankly, as between the two I can do without cell service where I have a land-line and good ADSL.
I have talked to a Regional Verizon Rep, and he has admitted to a drop call situation that Verizon has been working on. I have our Home/Office number to simulring with the Cell, but Verizon latterly goes in and out while I am sitting here at my desk. I just watched it switch calling areas on it's screen at 11:00 this morning. Please post what you find with their signal situation !!! I also have trouble with my Verizon signal, on the corner of Bryant and North Highland. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel Curtin" <curtin@telerama.com> To: <neighborhood@highlandpark.pgh.pa.us> Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2005 1:54 PM Subject: [Highland Park] poor cell phone signal

I have a similar problem with Verizon Wireless in the 1100 block of N. Euclid: usually a weak signal, with an average of one or two calls a day interrupted. I complained and the service rep "wrote a ticket" to check the signal reception. So far, no remediation. I've always conceived of the problem as being in the "shadow" of a hill or tower or something. I certainly hope that Verizon gets enough complaints that the answer to your second question is "yes". - Mike Eversmeyer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel Curtin" <curtin@telerama.com> To: <neighborhood@highlandpark.pgh.pa.us> Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2005 1:54 PM Subject: [Highland Park] poor cell phone signal

I know there've been a lot of emails on this already, but it's a pet peeve of mine so I'll chime in. I too have Verizon (1100 block of Portland) and service is lousy throughout the whole HP area). The irony is that I've used Verizon since 1997 and I never had a problem until they "upgraded" me to digital service (from analog) a year and a half ago. I've complained numerous times, and they've upgraded the software on my phone, even gave me a new phone, but the service never improves. I've been hesitant to change service providers w/o knowing if other providers' service is any better. Someone responded that Sprint is good in HP. Can anyone else confirm that? If so, the solution is to switch providers as soon as it's practical. --- Daniel Curtin <curtin@telerama.com> wrote:
