The majority of you wrote "no", so we'll try to find some other way to deal with these notices. Perhaps we could list them on the web site. (The Saab was sold, and the seller was grateful that the ad went out, by the way.) I also asked whether we ought to include notices of special events going on outside Highland Park. The majority of the answers to this question were "yes", but many included the qualification that it be something out of the ordinary and with relevance to Highland Park. Thanks again to everyone who responded! Your responses will guide the operation of the list. Finally, don't forget that this week is the last week of the summer that the Highland Park swimming pool will be open. Monday, September 1, is Labor Day; the outdoor pools will close after the holiday. Rudy

THE LEARNING CLUB IN HIGHLAND PARK We are working to be a pivotal force in Highland Park by addressing the educational needs of the community. The Learning Club provides individual and small group tutoring to children in general academic subjects; after-school and summer programming; and weekend project-based activities. The overriding philosophy of The Learning Club in Highland Park is that any child can learn at the level of his or her intellectual, social, and emotional continuum of development. Services at The Learning Club in Highland Park - The Enhanced Learning System is our learning support program for students falling behind, or students wishing to get ahead. From our intimate connection to your child's school, the use of technology at various steps of the learning process, and our use of a child's interests in determining resources procurement, our process is comprehensive. By triangulating the student's interests and needs to the resources of the center; applying the curriculum to state standards; building relationships with the child's school; and storing all of the information in several database modules, The Learning Club in Highland Park provides a service and a source of information that is currently unmatched by any organization in the Pittsburgh area. - Learning Clubs are multidisciplinary classes centered on topics of interests to youth. This summer, we offered The Book Club, The Math Club, and The 1600 Club (centered on vocabulary building, test, and study skills). Each club accommodates 10 students per session. The clubs are designed around Pittsburgh Public School standards, as well as linked to the National Standards in a variety of disciplines. Further, each project includes literacy, math, science, and technology. Participants are admitted into the clubs on a first-come, first-served basis. Let our professional educators guide your child through his/her homework. You come back when your child is done. Then, enjoy your dinner. Simple enough? When: Daily 2:30 until 6:00 Duration: monthly based on daily hour expectation Cost: $3.50/hour or $10.00 per day THE BOOK CLUB (Starts September 27) Reading can fun. It's even more fun when we make it a social activity with projects that will make each book more memorable. The club is designed to foster the love of reading as well as complete your child's book report requirements for the year. When: Saturday Mornings 10:30 until 12:30 Duration: Renews every six weeks. Different books every session. Cost: $75 per session THE MATH CLUB (Starts September 27) Math. Just the word gives some children a headache. No headaches in our Math Club, where students become active consumers of math and learn through experience the meaning of numbers. Our most recent math club spent six weeks collecting data about customers at Tazza D'Oro. They interpreted the data and wrote a report for Amy, the owner. When: Saturday Mornings 1:00 until 3:00 Duration: Renews every six weeks. Every session covers the basics. Different projects each session. Cost: $75 per session THE YOUNG ARTIST'S CLUB (Starts September 27) Almost all children doodle. The Young Artist's Club is designed to take children at all levels of drawing to the next step. The artist-teacher will lead children through an exploration of shape, color, sketching, and multimedia When: Saturday Afternoons 3:30 until 5:30 Duration: Renews every six weeks. Different books every session. [Highland Park] Run for Literacy 5K

A morning that can't go wrong?! Food, music, books for sale, yoga, massage, drumming, and a 5K run and a 2-mile walk through beautiful Highland Park on a September Sunday morning! Come and see for yourself at the second annual "Run for Literacy 5K," benefiting Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. The event is September 14 beginning at 8:00 a.m. with pre-race stretching/yoga and will conclude in the early afternoon with the Pittsburgh Wellness Fair. The race begins at 8:30; the walk at 8:45, rain or shine! Win prizes, even if you don't win the race! Two of these items include a question for you--should we include these types of items in the future? -Rudy COMMUNITY PLAN NEEDS OFFICE SUPPLIES Community Plan Coordinator Brenda Cole needs supplies (file folders, copier paper, cleaning supplies, etc.) for the office the Plan maintains at the Farmhouse. PROBLEMS IN JULY - BE VIGILANT Two Highland Park residents wrote in July to report problems. Someone stole bikes from a garage in one incident, and someone was stealing cell phones and cameras when home owners walked in on him in the other incident. Let's all watch out for our neighbors. Report all suspicious activity to the police. Consider forming a block watch--contact Jan Stayianos of the HPCC for assistance. CAR FOR SALE (Posted on behalf of the car's owners; please direct all inquiries to them...) Clean 1995 Saab SE with 54,000 miles. 6-cylinder automatic with leather, sunroof, heated seats, wood dash, climate control, traction control, cassette deck (wired for trunk CD changer), Michelin tires (2 new ones), and sport and snow buttons. It has had one (non-smoking) owner, been garage kept and meticulously maintained (all original Saab maintenance records are available). Asking $7,900 or best offer. West End Elliott Citizens Council will be holding a Meeting and Candle Light Vigil on August 22 at 7:00pm These meetings are open to all who are concerned about the current situation with police, crossing guard, and EMT layoffs, and zone closings. [Highland Park] HPCC Board of Directors Nominations

I am looking for recommendations for new HPCC Board members. I am looking for 5-10 people from the neighborhood who are interested in taking a leading role in the community activities that promote and enhance the quality of life in the Highland Park area. Any Board member should be willing to attend the 10 meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except July and December), be willing to discuss issues that come up, and to help out with HPCC activities. With the completion of the planning process of the Community Plan, it is now time to begin working on the recommendations that have been developed from the planning process. Please let me know of any neighbors or friends who will make a good HPCC Board member. Ideally, they should be nominated at the August meeting on the 21st, so they may be voted on at the annual meeting in September. [Highland Park] Pool stays open, Reservoir of Jazz schedule shortened due to City budget crisis

Mayor Murphy announced massive layoffs yesterday in an attempt to deal with the City's budget crisis: <http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/mayor/html/city_press_releases.html#08-06-…> Just six of the City's pools will remain open after this week. According to the Post-Gazette, the Highland Park pool will continue to operate (as originally scheduled) until the end of August: <http://www.post-gazette.com/neigh_city/20030807centersc3.asp#list> The Citiparks Special Events office, which runs the Reservoir of Jazz, is to be closed. There will be two more events, on the 10th and the 17th, but the remaining two have been canceled according to Kevin Amos, program coordinator of that office. Obviously, the effects of the budget crisis will be felt throughout the city. I have no information on other changes that will affect our neighborhood at this time. Rudy
