CITY COUNCIL PRESENTATIONS Angelle Guyette and Mary Jo Bradley attended the City Council meeting this morning. Angelle handed in the petition with 386 signatures and gave a very good presentation. Gene Ricciardi had her taped testimony sent to the Act 47 development people for inclusion in their deliberations. Good job, Angelle. Angelle and Mary Jo met with Councilman Ricciardi after the meeting. He said we made points he had not considered so he was pleased to have our input. One of Angelle's excellent recommendations was a way to market the training and the Academy in order to bring in additional funds. Another opportunity to get on record is for some of us to speak at the regular Wednesday Council meeting tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Act 47 recommendations are available online from the City council's website: <http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/council/> For those of you who have not had the opportunity to attend the CPA yet, below is some information which you might find helpful plus there are some additional points of concern that you might want to address when you contact City Council and/or Act 47 members. To put it as simply as possible: Act 47 is a proposal to the City of a 5 year plan for financial recovery. In regards to the Police Training Academy, the proposal is to close the Police Academy for six months out of the year. During those six months it would be used for in-service and yearly training. They are to find a way to plan to combine the County and City together by 2005. There is NO scheduled Citizen's Police Academy or any other training to be anywhere else during that time. Those currently involved with the training are either being transferred or their jobs terminated. The State and City require Police Officers to be certified with 6 hrs of training a year, 8 hours of firearms training, and updates for CPR, First Aid - First Responder training every two years. This training is PER OFFICER. There are at least 900 Officers in the City of Pittsburgh. You can probably identify your own concerns to write about, too, but just a few comments on the above info. As you know we have reported on what good training we had and how long it took us; it just does not make sense to think that six months is enough time to train 900 Officers. Another issue that concerns those of us who work in our communities is that Elaine Caparelli's position as Volunteer Coordinator will be eliminated; this really pulls the rug out from under the volunteer population's contribution and access to the Police. As far as our trainers go, if this six month plan goes into effect they will have to be transferred or terminated and we will lose the certified trainers that make this such a quality program. WHAT CAN YOU DO? ACTION STEPS SPEAK AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING TOMORROW AT 10:00 A.M. CONTACT CITY COUNCIL AND ACT 47 (ADDRESSES BELOW) DOWNLOAD PETITION AND GET SIGNATURES START MAKING CALLS TO YOUR OWN NETWORK One problem is that time is very, very short - we did not realize it but Council is meeting with Act 47 on Friday to go over the proposal page-by-page which means we need to notify people and prod them to get their input in ASAP. A letter and the petition is being sent to all of the CPA alumna but FAX and e-mails will probably work best. It would be helpful if you could identify yourselves as graduates of the Academy. [Highland Park] Stolen Bikes

I just got off the phone with Zone 5 Police (412-665-3605) after having spotted, and had arrested the idiot currently in possession of my wifes bike (Someone broke into our garage and stole it over the last few days) YAAY! Anyhoo, the good Officer McNamara asked if I had any idea who might own the other bike (idiots don't ride alone apparantley); an Orange Gary Fisher with Yellow forks, and stripes. This is as much info as the Officer would divulge, but asked that I post this so that if you are out there; dig out your serial numbers, and go get it. Also he asked to remind you all that if you have had a bike stolen, and you feel you can identify it reasonably in some manner, then please remember that you can come down to the Zone 5 station, and you will be allowed to look through the bikes they have on hold. Should any bike remain in their care for, I think a year; then they do what ever repairs are necessary, and donate them to needy kids. Cheer and Happy hunting Brett

[Highland Park] Yard sale today!

As you should know by now, the yearly Highland Park yard sale is going on today. Get your free maps at the corners of Stanton and Highland or Hampton and Negley. Along the way, you may wish to stop at Crystal Radiance Wellness Studio at 5810 Bryant St for a chair massage. The sessions will be given this afternoon to all Highland Park Neighbors by request on a first-come first-serve basis. The first 2 minutes will be free, and each additional minute will be $1, with a 5-minute minimum. They have gift certificates at a discounted rate for Fathers Day. The Nuin Center is selling tables that could be used for yard sales--get them while they last (and before noon today). Other Highland Park businesses may also be having special deals--so be sure to visit them too! Rudy

Highland Park resident and artist Maritza Mosquera's Immigrant Body: in translation opens on Saturday June 5 and runs until June 26th at Artist Image Resource on the North Side. (518 Foreland Street. 412.321.8664) June 9th is hosted by Education Innovations, Inc. Immigrant Body: in translation presents voices of an American community through collaborations, dialogues and installations. It brings people together to share individual stories of immigration and emigration within and outside the United States. Dialogues: Homebody: are informal community dialogues about where we come from. They take place at Artists Image Resource on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 pm. June 9 hosted by Latin American Cultural Union and Education Innovations, Inc. June 16 hosted by Hill House Association and Latin American Cultural Union Collaborations: Gatherings to capture stories and images were organized on individual basis and with assistance from Aliquippa Alliance for Unity and Development, Hill House Association, LEDP at Liberty Elementary School, The Jewish American Museum of Pittsburgh, Latin American Cultural Union, Education Innovations and other community groups. Come view the exhibition, share a light snack and take part in the installation as it furthers its collection of our stories of immigration or emigration to the United States, Western Pennsylvania, and Pittsburgh. Artists Image Resource is funded by the PA Council on the Arts, the Allegheny Regional Asset District, the Heinz Endowment, the Pittsburgh Foundation, an Anonymous Pittsburgh donor, and individual contributors. Maritza Mosquera is a painter and installation artist, born in Quito, Ecuador, now residing in (Highland Park) Pittsburgh, PA. She uses listening as a practice in all her work including art, activism, parenting, education programming and Re-evaluation Counseling. [Highland Park] Yard Sale

On Sunday June 6, from 9AM - whenever we decide to quit, about 100 of our fellow Highland Park Neighbors will have Yard Sales at the same time. We have a great time and as many as 1000 people from our neighborhood, the city and suburbs come and buy our treasures. If you are a neighbor in Highland Park and want to participate as a seller of stuff, the Community Club wants to help you. We provide advertising and signs, balloons and, most importantly lists of items for sale and maps of sale locations. Volunteers hand out these maps at two locations in Highland Park (the corners of Highland and Stanton and of Negley and Hampton). Simply send a check for $12 (made out to HPCC) to: J. Wolfe 5910 Wellesley Avenue Pittsburgh 15206. I need the information by Wednesday June 3 at 9PM. On Saturday morning June 5 you can pick up the signs and balloons on my porch for the sale on Sunday. Education Innovations, Inc. is still accepting donated items for next week's community yard sale. You can drop off items at 914 Heberton Street, or call us to schedule a pick-up of your donated item.
