Recently I have received emails about the stone wall on Bunkerhill Street, the need for repairs, and who to contact about getting the repairs done. Below is a list of numbers that you can call to see if we can't get the City to fix this wall. The Mayor's Service Center is the first place to call (for this and most other issues). I have added a few others that might be helpful for other issues, for your future reference. [Highland Park] Weekly Walks in the Woods

On Wednesday I plan to participate in the free "Weekly Walk in the Woods" sponsored by Venture Outdoors (formerly Western Pennsylvania Field Institute) and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. In the past, the walk has lasted about 1 and 1/2 hours and has included activities such as identifying plants and park features and discussing park history. This time I'll bring a list of flowers to be planted around the reconstructed fountain and drawings showing what the final result will look like. I hope to see you there! Every third Wednesday during the summer the walk starts in Highland Park at the North Highland Avenue entrance at 6:30 pm. The walk is free, worthwhile, and not too difficult--there are some steep steps and some mud, but most of it is pretty easy. There are walks in the other City parks as well--one each week. In months which have 5 weeks, a walk is scheduled at Washington's Landing on that last Wednesday of the month. [Highland Park] Caution: Damaged Wall May Be Hazardous To Your Children

I am planning to call Mr. Blankenship this week about the Bunker Hill wall: The damage seems to be spreading and more and more of the wall is coming down while we wait for the repair. I doubt that this wall is spontaneously falling. More likely kids are playing on it and causing more damage, which of course means that one of them is bound to become injured when the heavy stone blocks fall. Do we need to wait for a child to be crushed here? Can we at least put a barricade around the damaged area to protect the kids from the wall and the wall from the kids? I believe that this is an accident (and probably a law suit) waiting to happen... Lorraine Chesek. M.D. Greystone Drive

To all: I had a chance to speak to Dominick's daughter. They are still digging out. The funeral was last week and she said it was very nice. On the other hand, they are still shocked and trying to figure out how to get people their clothes, to clean up the paper and grieve. I asked about contributions. They said he had never mentioned anything. What would be the most help to them would a donation to the estate as he had MANY unpaid bills and that would really help. If folks can send me a check (made out to the Estate of Dominick T. We are new to Highland Park and need recommendations for a cleaning lady. We would prefer someone who works independently and not through an agency. Pardon my cynicism, but as a lawyer and a person intimately familiar with the workings of Pittsburgh government, let me assure you that if the errant motorist had insurance coverage, the insurer settled this claim almost as fast as it was asserted and the money has long since been mis-used by the city's irresponsible administration. You have been routinely lied to, which is the modus operandi of Pittsburgh municipal mis-government. Actually, the city does a horrible job of asserting and following up claims for damage to city property, unlike, for example, power and telephone companies who very systematically assert and follow up claims against motorists who collide with the utility poles that jump out in front of them (really, that's what one motorist claimed, much like the tree that jumped in front of Sonny Bono). The wall will get repaired when enough neighborhood residents make a big enough stink and our council representative gets activated (probably in an election year). That's how city government here works.
