Hello Highland Park, I have the report from Paola's friend regarding their car being broken into at Highland Park. I didn't find a lot of reports, but the Zoo Parking Lot seems to be a virtual shopping mall for criminals. The majority of my thefts in Zone Five area are "Thefts from Vehicles." I repeatedly warn people to please secure their items in their trunks, if you MUST carry them in your car. Items stolen typically include purses, briefcases, cd's, wallets, cell phones, money, laptops, clothing, backpacks, ect. Normally, these items are left in the open, sitting on the front seats. (And in case you were wondering, thieves are not deterred by the jacket, blanket or towel you cover your items with...that's kind of like a red flag that something really valuable is hiding under it.) FYI: Highland Park and Bloomfield also lead Zone Five in "Thefts from Vehicles" and "Thefts of Vehicles." As the weather gets a little warmer, please don't start your cars, turn on the air, and run back inside. Dear Highland Parker, As you may know through our recent presentations at the Community Club meetings, the Highland Park CDC has been very busy lately. Our residential project on Mellon Street is off and running with the historic restoration of the building at 839 Mellon Street, the "Sutherland Apartments." The "Sutherland" is a seven unit residential building, formerly owned by a notorious slum landlord, which was once the site of literally hundreds of 911 calls and several gunfights. One of the centerpieces of this building is its stunning stained glass window, which is in dire need of restoration. Highland Park needs your help to restore the window by enrolling in a stained glass class sponsored by the Union Project! "Going for Baroque at St. Andrew's . . . ." Sunday, June 12, 4:30 p.m. All are invited to an afternoon recital featuring Barbara Lewis and Ellen Spondike, Peter Luley, David Durkop, and musicians from the St. Andrew's community in celebration of the acquisition of our new, two-manual French Harpsichord. Summer refreshments will be featured at a Reception immediately following the recital. All are welcome! [Highland Park] Young Adult Cat Wanted

My husband and I are interested in adding a young adult cat to our family. Due to the age and health of our oldest cat, the vet advised us against adopting a cat that has been exposed to the viruses commonly found in outdoor and shelter cats. He told us that if we got a cat from a shelter, we would need to quarantine the cat for three weeks. If you know of a young adult cat, in good health and preferably one that gets along with other cats, that is looking for a new home, please send me an email. [Highland Park] help with tree fungus..

We have just had our third tree die from a fungus...it came out in the Spring and then last week the leaves died and after consulting a tree doctor he said it was a fungus... This is one a year for us and none of our neighbors seem tohave this problem...anyone else have this problem and if so what do you do to stop it. We live up on Heberton quite close to the park,. Union Project Update - www.unionproject.org - Volunteers Needed 12 volunteers are needed to help clean stained glass windows as part of our stained glass restoration classes and to assist with putting together a mailing. Volunteer help is needed this Thursday, June 9, from 7-9 pm. No previous experience is necessary. Volunteers will also be needed on July 9, July 16 and July 23 to assist with gardening between 10 am and 2 pm. Magic Penny Garden request for plants and volunteers Persephone Project founder/director and UP resident artist Stephanie Flom is creating a Magic Penny Garden, a public artwork on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues. The garden is being designed by Stephanie along with ten community collaborators and will be comprised of plants shared by community members. The shared plants are those that have been given to the gardener and hold special meaning because of the significance of the narrative they hold. Please bring a perennial plant from your garden to the Union Project on Sunday, June 26 between 1 and 4 pm to help create the Magic Penny Garden. Join Stephanie and other community volunteers on three Saturdays in July from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help plant the garden. The Persephone Project is a community conceptual art project that promotes gardening as contemporary art and recognizes gardeners as artists.
